Cable barrier prevents head on collision

Jake brakes on ice can cause you to jack knife. You are better off easing into your brakes

 

High Jakes and very low gear will cause a jackknife if it’s slick enough. If you’re on pure wet ice you don’t want to do anything but keep it straight until you’re getting traction back. Now in slick conditions but not pure ice then you can use the Jakes but I’d keep it on medium and wouldn’t drop gears too early. You want to use the Jakes just as a small aid instead and rely more on your service brakes as all 18 wheels will be slowing you down instead of just 8.

 

I was thinking medium to low jakes with a light tap on brakes and allow engine to slow down truck, I guess each situation is different and adapting is key without losing your head.

 

Like i say we can agree to disagree. But i stand by my statement he shouldve been on breaks sooner.

 

Not to mention if it did happen to be ice . It is much easier to pull out of a jacknife from braking to hard then it is to pull out of it when u swerving over to the shoulder out of control

Like mentioned, wide angle 'fish eye' lenses on dash cams make things appear closer than they are. Also, changes in speed can be a bit delayed in showing on the display.

That said, I think he could have slowed more.
