The few times i went to N M i found it cheaper to buy the permit at the port of entery, unless you plan on going ther quite often. they are kind of a pain there but they also told me that was the best way to go because i did not plan on going there much. Make sure you have your unified carrier paid up to date. Mike

Sorry i don't really recall the cost, but it was not all that much. If they are on your cab card you have to do paper work every three months even if you don't go there that's why they were telling me to just by the permit. They used to have the singal state reg and have changed it to the unified carrier. They gave me some b s about running unreg. because i had not paid my singal state i had never had it checked before but they did every time i went in there so i paid that quick. Don't mind the bad spelling i am home on the couch and don't feel like getting up and checking to make it right. Mike

If you pass through there 3x weekely, you want to get the permit. It costs a lot more to have to buy a permit every time--like 2 or 3 times more.
Its real easy to get on the internet. The site where you sign up is efile.state.nm.us

You will need to create a new account with a user name and password. After that, sign to the system with your new username. Look under the heading Business Filing and click on Motor Vehicle/Commercial Vehicle. Then click on Order Weight Distance E-Permits to register your truck. I think the cost for the permit is something like $3 bucks and then you need to file quarterly to pay for your mileage. You will need your truck info, DOT number and Federal ID or Taxpayer ID number to get signed up. You can do that on line too and its way cheaper than buying a permit at the port, just ask the officer next time you are there. The other good thing is they go off your DOT number on the truck when you roll up to the little booth and you usually won't even have to stop. I have decided the less you talk to the NM people the happier you will be.

If the efile website won't work, try tax.state.nm.us/forms/comveh.htm You of course need to put www. in front of the web address to get there. I think the first one will get you there. I ran just under 3400 miles in NM last Quarter and I owed them $148 total. A permit from Gallup to Raton costs somewhere around $65 if you buy it at the port, I forget the mileage but its around 400. That means that 3400 miles of permits paid for at the port would be over $500. Personally I like $148 better.

Do not let your permit lapse either.......

NM DOT will turn you upside-down and shake the change from your pockets....

Its the same thing. You can get it online at the site I mentioned above. Once you are in the system, the guy in the little booth at the scale will type in you DOT number off your truck and you can roll on through. Much easier, PrePass is even easier for $16 per month. I highly recommend it.
