    Hey everyone:biggrin_25525:,
Well first off thanks for going in here and reading this, any information in the matter will be greatly appreciated.
I'm a girl, 23 yrs of age, I have a friend who is thinking of doing the whole truck driving life style, he is a really good friend of mine and I was thinking I could do it as well, I'm used to being on the road for hrs on end since my father used to buy trucks and drive them all the way to Costa Rica (Central America), Now how he put it was that we could be team drivers, which I trust him so I have no issue with that, but can we go up to a company and ask to be team drivers? Or do THEY pick who will and will not be on teams? also... any woman out there that have done this... what was your experience on the matter? Also do guys act... different per say with women who drive? as in do they get treated bad..Or indifferent b/c there woman and there truck drivers? I understand that it is a lifestyle, I do not have any issues with that since at the present time I do not have anything tying me down, and as i stated previously I'm quite used to the long hrs, just wondering if there are differences when it comes to a woman being a truck driver rather than a man, also... the truck stops they have showers of woman... are the clean??? Should I always have my Lysol can with me when I walk in? lol are they as bad as the guys showers? if anyone can provide me with info it will be greatly appreciated.
at the current time I do have a job, which I hate so it's not as if I'm doing this as a last option per say, just looking for a change in my life, I hate where I live and what I do... so a change would be nice... a permanent change in would be rather nice as well lol.

Once more thank you for your time and any advice is appreciated.

As for the team driving, I'll let some of the other ladies here answer, as they are team drivers, and at present, I am just a passenger w/hubby.
As far as how women drivers are treated, I guess that really depends on your personality.
If you behave like a professional, you will be treated as a professional. Of course, there ARE always the few who will either treat you as if you are a brain-dead female, or as if you are just driving to "hook-up", but that doesn't really happen too often.

As for the showers, I carry a few cleaning supplies in my shower bag (I'm a bit of a germophobe), and ALWAYS wear shower shoes, and will give the room a bit of a cleaning before I will use them.
Some truck stops do have separate showers for women, but I've found those are mostly just a shower with a door that locks, inside the ladies bathroom (EWW!).

The bigger TS chains, Flying J, Petro, Pilot, have shower rooms that you can use, separate from others. If you ever get to Wyoming, the Little America has the BEST shower rooms! They are large, well-lit, and if you ask for one, you can get one that has a tub in it! (And let me tell ya, after awhile on the road, a gal is REALLY appreciative of a good, long soak!! :yes2557:) And, again, I will scrub HECK out of it, before I climb in, even though they are always clean....just my little OCD thing!

Good luck, and enjoy this lifestyle! I sure do!

I'll be leaving for truck school with CR England within a few weeks. All of their drivers running company trucks are in teams (their only single drivers are owner/operators leasing trucks). When you sign up for school, they ask what your preferences are. Do you have a person you wish to team up with? Or should they pick a team driver for you? Apparently two people wishing to drive as a team can go into school together. This is my experience with the CRE application process.:biggrin_25520:

thank you for the responses, well we are planning on going to school at the around the same time, my friend is in another state and I'm in NJ so it wont be the same school, soo should I safely assume that it would be a fat chance that they would let us be partners since we both are just getting off school and starting this? the thing is I'm worried about doing this with people I dont know... I'm afraid I'll want to choke who ever my partner would be for being discusting/a pig or just a plain ##### to me.... i would rather hae my friend I know I can stand him for long periods of time... lol I'm sure ill get tothe point I want to choke him too but I'm more confident that it will take much longer than a stranger lol.
Also i'm afraid ill also want to kill them if there listen to music that I hate... then your stuck in a truck listening to things you dont like.... for 10 hrs.. until you drive and then they might hate your music for there 10 hrs lol.

and thanks simplyred1962, I think I would carry the Lysol with me with in case anyway lol, I was just wondering just how BAD they where, I read some of the other post and i started to think... there prob to the point that i would clean the entire thing to be able to feel clean after I'm done lol (germafove over here too and a little ocded as well lol)

You may have to "Put on your big girl panties and suck it up for awhile" if this is the road you choose. If there is a problem with your trainer plz try to keep the lines of communication open, if all else fails request another trainer. Don`t just throw your hands in the air and say I`m done and get off the truck cause you will get screwed on your DAC.
I`m not saying that you won`t get the chance to team with your friend but it won`t be for awhile.

SilverDragon, I have nothing to add, but just wanted to say I see you're from Trenton. I worked in the old GM plant there for 20 years....nothing but a slab of concrete now. Moved out of NJ in '97. Best of luck to you in your new career choice. It won't be easy, but you can do it if you give it your complete and undevided attention.

You can tell the company you plan to work for that you have someone you'll be teaming with. Then you just have to wait for the other person to finish, if you get done first, or they'll have to wait for you. Once you are both done the company will most likely bring you both through orientation at the same time. Now, if you have to go out with a trainer, you will both be getting seperate trainers. But, once that is done, they'll bring you both back and give you a truck together.

Companies that run teams WANT you with someone that you are comfortable with as it makes for the best team driving all around.

    Thank you all ^.^
lol startcommander haha I know I have to suck it up if i dont get along with them... it's just like any other job.. theres always that person that you may not get along with the greatest but if you want the job and you want to go on you have to deal with it, learned that a while ago... still doesnt mean i wont want to kill them for anoying me lol they would just never know... and my ipod would come in extremly handy at that point and time i guess lol ^.^

thanks Raezzor that makes me at least have some hopes up, I dont mind doing the training separetly, if it has to happen so let it be, but later on as a permanent team i would just like for it to be my friend and I lol ^.^ well at least theres some good news yay lol ^.^

I currently live with me mother, we split mortgage for the house that she owns, I was telling her about me thinking of doing this, she knows I could do it, but she said she wants me home every other weekend, the way I'm thinking is dont they give more OTR time if you basiclly say.... i dont care where I land or how long i take out? what I'm thinking is that if me and my friend do this... where going to do it and just land where ever and see the USA... thats something we both have always wanted to do... grated its not like a fun trip this is work but on the days that we would get off, i would just rather be where ever instead of HAVING to come back all the way up to NJ... did i mention i HATE this place? lol >.<
am i safe to assume that since it would free up your schedule and its more flexible that it's easier to get enough OTR? or am I ery much mistaken to think that?

Stevens Transport has the Dumb and Dumber program still (I Think) and I am not calling you dumb.... LOL. it is just that after you drive with a trainer for a time, they put you with another one that is new. We call that the dumb and dumber program.
