Is there such a thing? I am currently an operator who owns my own truck. I am leased to a company and currently operate under their USDOT number.
Is it possible for me to apply for my own authority while still leased to them.
The point being that I may terminate my lease with them due do non-performance on their part and would like to make a quick transition to full independence as soon as possible.
Dual operating authority

Can I have my own and operate under someone else’s at the same time?

You can only operate under one at a time. It takes three weeks from the time you apply until it goes active if you have all your ducks in a row.

That's what I did. I applied for DOT# and remained leased on until my liability insurance became active. At that point I terminated the lease and waited for FMCSA to acknowledge the insurance being active and changing my operating authority status to active.
So, the very application for DOT# and obtaining it (after an hour or so) does not prevent you from working for someone else. When insurance becomes active, e.i. when you pay for it then you should not remain leased on.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
