I've seen dozens a long way from the road but only a couple within 100 feet of the pavement.

I remember one night I saw 13 moose just between Ignace and Upsula on #17.
Good for me I had lots of time, had seen 4 or 5 earlier and was putting along at 80 km/h just in case.
Sure enough, near English River a cow comes charging out of the passenger side ditch and right across my path.
I saw something move out of the corner of my eye and was on the brake in a flash, instinctive reaction.
Just missed her, could have reached out the window and slapped her ### as I passed by.

Another time was on the TCH near Banff late one night, was snowing nicely, I come around a curve and there's a herd of Elk standing on the road licking salt.
I'm stopped with the 4 ways on, tooting the horn, yelling at them, banging my hand against the door, the didn't even flinch!
Finally I had enough and started creeping through them and slapping them as I passed through the herd to get them to move.
Not the brightest animals on the planet, good thing they built tunnels for them to cross the road safely.

Cows are stupid too, especially free range cows.
Every once in a while you see a cow or bull that jumped the fence, not uncommon, but to crest a hill and see a herd of cattle standing on the highway can be a shock to the system.
    It does not compute!

Tip of the day, never blow your horn at a moose, not a smart thing to do.
    Trust me!

Good job ol' Barney Fife didn't see that, that's a large fine. Same as having to wait for a herd a Mountain Sheep going through Jasper. We sat there for close to an hour before he finally threw on the siren and herded them over to the shoulder. National Parks, can't do squat. You'd do less time robbin' a store.

Sometimes you can see way more with NO lights on.
    Lights create a blind spot.

What's the large fine for, yelling at them or slapping them?

There's a law against feeding them to but people do it anyway.
That's the main reason the animals don't fear people, they're used to them.

Personally I don't care what Barney might think, he's not likely to be seen at 2:00 AM on a Wednesday during winter in BC unless there's a crash, an avalanche, a murder, fresh donuts or a shift change, and if he did show up I would ask him if he had any firecrackers on him.

One time I pulled over to check my chains on #16 at a pull off area where the sheep hang around for handouts.
There was a W900 parked there, the driver had the door open and was feeding bread to a big male sheep that had it's front hooves on the first step while his wife took pictures.
When he stopped feeding it the sheep climbed onto the step and was trying to get into the truck.
It had one leg over the drivers lap and the other on the steering wheel and it was trying to jump into the cab with the driver and his wife.
The driver had hold of it's horns and had his feet against the sheep's middle and was pushing for all he was worth.
The sheep was winning until it lost it's footing but landed on all 4's as mountain sheep will do.

    Stupid humans!
I was rooting for the sheep to get the whole loaf of bread, a salad and a jar of peanut butter while he was at it!

Not a lot of moose on I 95 or I 40 for that matter. Thus the reason to shut of those bright lights.
