Well, yes and no. That's true, a common truck will be easier to find, but it will break down a lot more often than a Western Star with a Cat. And I haven't had the best luck with Freightliner dealers. Besides, if current trends continue, and there's no reason it shouldn't, O/O's will be almost extinct in 5 years.

Cost of operation keeps going up. I can remember some 20 years ago there was a rumor that O/O would be out of business because of mega fleets. Its a rumor only. People will always want to own.jebster17 and Rubber duck kw Thank this.

There's still too many of us knot heads for O/O's to be extinct in 5 years.
As far as cheap and reliable? I don't like them, but you won't beat a Freightliner. If you can get away with a pre emissions truck get a FLD120 or FLD132 Classic XL.
If you have to get emissions, best of luck. It may be cheap but doubtful that it will be reliable.blairandgretchen and lovesthedrive Thank this. -
Then when you have enough money to buy your dream truck and arent stuck with payments to other things lke an ex and mortgage.
You could always make a boondocking rig like this fellow.
Who's ready for a custom super sleeper truck tour?blairandgretchen, PoleCrusher and jamespmack Thank this. -
Cheapest are usually those internationals with those POS maxxforce engines. You couldn’t gift me one honestly. If you’re thinking of starting off start off with what most folks use which is the cascadia. They’re not pretty but there’s always parts for them and they’re decent with the fuel mileage. Make sure you buy one that’s well taken care of, preferibly a manual and make sure to idle it as little as possible.

Is the reason for the cost going up due to more regulations from the government? Allowing them to collect more and more money?
