I lived in Orange County and went to college in Chico. That was nearly 30 years ago. Even then, 99 was freeway most of the way between the split and Sacramento. 1 signal in Livingston. When I started driving about 10 years later, that signal was long gone.

Not from Texas, I10 to the I5 to 99 is the most direct route, deviating onto the 210 to go is within 1 mile of taking the 10 thru downtown, I do don't recommend going into downtown without a reason.
Going thru Barstow adds 25 miles to the 210 route, Going up the 15 to 395 to the 58 (Boron for your gps) adds about 8 miles over the 210, Going up the 210 / 215 / 15 / 138 / 134-14 / 138-ave D thru Gorman adds 4 miles to the 210, or taking the 14 up thru Mojave and Tehachapi adds 5 miles to the Gorman route. Even taking 10 to CA-95 Blythe/Needles then up to the 40 is only 8 miles longer than going the 10 / 210 / 5 / 99.
Basically no real big mileage differences, mostly driver preference. The fastest most of the time is going to be the 10 / 210 / 5 / 99, They all have a set of DOT Scales to go thru so no real big deal there. The road between Blythe and Needles is not great and prone to flash floods, the rest ar regular highways for the most part. -
Going from Dallas taking I20-I10 through Socal is probably 75 miles farther than taking US287 to I40 to 58 to 99.

Big improvement to the area

Just for an update. I took 287 to 40 to Barstow/Bakersfield and up 99 on the way up. 99 to 5 then 210 to 40 to Needles then down to 10 on way back. Didn’t make much difference on time but driving at night on way back was NICE. Needles to Blythe sucks on the two lane road but keeps you moving. Taken this trip a couple times now and getting more comfortable out west. They need more truck stops around Sacramento. The 49er was a cesspool.

I wouldnt mind if sacramento and everything south of it suddenly disappeared off the map overnight, and i know i aint the only one

Maybe I didn't read it right. On the way back you went 210 to 40? That means you went up 15 to Barstow?
If you come over the grapevine (5 south) you get on the 210 to 10 and east to Texas. -
No, excuse my error. I had 210 on the brain for some reason. I came down 5 and then took Stockdale Hwy over to Bakersfield. Then 58 over to Barstow/40 Avoided everything to the south.dosgatos Thanks this.

I usually left 5 at Lost Hills. Took Ca46 over to 99 then down to Bakersfield and the 58 east. Only slow down is in Wasco and that didn't amount to much.

Best way to do it, stockdale hwy thru bakersfield too many signals, unless you need to go shopping. You can find almost anything on or near stockdale highway.kemosabi49 Thanks this.
