Anyone know anything about those fellas you see with a trailer and a pickup?
They have dot and kyu numbers.
I’ve seen them haul cars,machines, jlg’s, etc.
Is it lucrative enough to get into?
You go about it same way as a traditional truck and trailer?
Any info or place to read up on it would be helpful.
Thanks
Pick up o/o question??

Yeah they are called hotshots. Probably only money to be made in that is something specialized or run down in the oilfield but that is just what ive heard, i dont have any experience with it. If u just looking to haul regular otr freight with a hotshot them guys are already cutting each others throats so bad . i met a driver i had dinner with about a month ago , he was a hotshot driver and i was working on my truck in the parking lot fixing a hose and he pulled up next to me asked me if i needed help. We got to talking for a while and went inside and had a meal . Real nice guy. Long story short he was running a hotshot pulling a horse trailer hauling motorcycles, but running illegally . no dot number no logbooks nothing. He hauled all his freight off uship and other places like that hauling motorcycles. Not sure how true his story was but he was making good money if it was true . but like i said everything he was doing was illegal and was one stop away from getting put out of business.
Badmon and BazookaJoe Thank this. -

Have been running cars for almost 7 years with Chevy 3500 and a 3 car trailer. All legal and have found the only way to make serious money is to run to the limits of the HOS on a weekly bases and pray there are no break downs or other down times.
I've noticed in recent times, past 12-18 months, that DOT's are paying a lot more attention to the commercial pickups with a trailer and it doesn't matter whether is freight or vehicles. If you're running this way best to be legal. TksLite bug, Badmon, BazookaJoe and 1 other person Thank this. -
Does he have to cross scales pulling a horse trailer?
Probably easy to dodge scales pulling a horse trailer, without attracting attention. -
No he didnt cross scales. Didnt have any dot number or anything to show he was running a business. No log books nothing.

He found a loophole; good for him.D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

Yep just relocating motorcycles all over the country. He had a good gig going. Had one of those horse trailers with the living quarters in the front of it. The money he was making if it was true was close to most o/op gross revenue , without all the regulations and expenses.

I run CDL 3 car also and in 6 months I had 2 inspections, both no problems. I get bypass on almost all weight stations and the ones I don't I just get asked for my cab card and let go immediately. I agree, stay legal and you will not get harassed.
