So I know experience is the key to higher pay. After getting between 6-12 months experience should I ask my employer for a raise or should I start looking for better companies. Also what kind of pay should I be seeking after 1 year?

What you should be doing is keeping your self out of all trouble that first year or three. The Industry is stupid in some ways constantly demanding this "Experience" But essentially keeping yourself spotless clean and square out of trouble. Thats all it is. And staying with one employer.
Don't be bothering them about pay. They will just dismiss you and replace you with a cheaper driver at less pay and more money for them.Texas_hwy_287, Puppage and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
At my company, we have a pay scale / raise sheet. After 1 year clean and all good, 2cpm raise. AND a week paid vacay. YMMV....but I bet it's in the paperwork somewhere, or just request it.
Best to you, man. Stay safe. -

Some companies have automatic pay raises, with no upper limit.
Here's one, but there's plenty more:
