When I transferred my CDL from TX to NV back in August, I took a ton of paperwork with me not knowing what to expect. In Reno, you will want to go to the DMV on Greg St. near the Petro, not the other one for 4 wheelers . It was about 10am on a weekday and they had me in and out in less than 30 minutes. First thing they asked is if I had the gold star on my TX CDL, which I did.
So they didn't need or even want to see the lease payment printouts, which were legit and went back like 7 months. She took my TX CDL, voided it with a hole puncher, and handed it back to me, glanced at my insurance card with the Reno address, and collected a little over a hundred bucks, Turns out the $100+ was not a bad deal, as my Nevada CDL is good through 2027. The state charges more than most but gives you an 8 year CDL! I love this state. If you actually want to move here @OP, it's almost as bad as Cali rent wise, but I know all the cheap spots for OTR drivers who only plan to be home a few days a month. Fun city.
I love California but.........

Can I rent your closet, if I promise to never show up and don't want a key to the apartment?
I just want a lease agreement.Last edited: Feb 7, 2020

LOL, the problem with buddying up on a place is receiving mail, which is half the point of doing it. Few of the pay weekly, no lease apts have individual mail boxes and you have to go to the front desk and beg for it. We would probably have to get married to pull it off. A "Real" Apt would require an additional signature on a lease, and one could get stuck with their credit ruined going into something like that.
I managed to find a place for $725 all bills paid that is not bad.. Huge balcony with a view of the mountains. Good for a single truck driver, maybe with a spouse, no children, it is small. Biker's bar on site and Indian restaurant that's not half bad, CVS maybe a football field away, and a convenience store with beer and liquor across the street, and a grocery store walking distance too. That's the best I could manage in 2 years as a company driver almost 2 years in living here.
But to the original point, in my experience, if you have the gold star on your license and car insurance with a Reno/Sparks address, the lease proof was not even necessary. Maybe I just got an extra nice gal who didn't care, but that was my experience. Best of luck. Take care @Chinatown
