Well as I've been told many times by my mom in these short 53 years, watch what you ask for. I got a roadside inspection in MI this week and as we were going over my loose leaf logs I asked the DOT inspector exactly what needs to be entered for a reset. His answer, verbatim, "If the inspecting officer can't add 34 hours and realize it's a reset writing it in the remarks section would probably go right over his/her head". We both got a laugh out of that, I got my clear inspection report and was released to continue my trip. Some of these inspectors do have a sense of humor.

Or "Hey officer, do these donuts stale stale?"
My previous company's log department only required city and state for the log pages when I did a 34. -
Unless you have a Motel Receipt to support your line 1
you best log the 34 on line 2
Exception is being at your domicile, then no receipt is required.

34 hours is a long time to show sleeper....
I use 1 and 2

When you are off duty, you are allowed to do anything you want. You can go to a restaurant, sleep, walk your dog, stay in a motel, swim in a river, go to a movie, take a nap in the park, play grab ### with the waitress etc. You need only log line 1, period.

(c)(2) Any period of 8 consecutive days may end with the beginning of any off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours.
Believe that's the 34-hour reset provision, here's the link:

I'll look to see if there's anything more specific in there. -
You can use either line 1 or line 2 or a combination of both to get your 34 hour restart. As long as your not on line 3 or 4 & accumulate a total of 34 consecutive hours between line 1 & 2, then you have your restart. You don't need motel receipts as stated above, that's just ridiculous. I've got a perfectly good bed sitting right here, a TV in the truck stop, a shower in the truck stop, & a restaurant in the truck stop. Why would I spent the money to go to a motel?
Also another thing that was said.... Log your 34 as straight sleeper birth? 34 hour restart or not, that is log falsification that a DOT officer will call you out on real quick. He knows you can't sit in that sleeper that long. You gotta poop sometime.... And I doubt your going to do that nasty thing in your sleeper when you have a toilet 20 feet away.... Oh wait, I'm talking to a bunch of truck drivers. Anything is possible & it won't surprise me.notarps4me Thanks this. -
As stated above the 34 hour restart can be any combination of line 1 and 2. The only time I showed 34 consecutive hours "off duty" was when I was at home. I do not recommend you show 34 hours in the sleeper. As stated above the DOT officers aren't stupid. Just be sure you show 8 consecutive hours in the bunk for your two sleep periods. Otherwise show off duty and relax.
notarps4me Thanks this. -
Yes, but if you are logging 34 hours in the sleeper you are asking for trouble about falsifying your log book.
