What’s the GVWR of your truck?

You might want to ask that question over in the hotshot forum? My guess is that's simply too big a trailer to keep under the CDL limits.

If your truck GVWR is over 10k you are not going to be pulling any 35+5 trailer without a CDL. Post up a picture of the vin sticker in the door jamb.

The bottom line is non CDL is difficult with a dually. Most non CDL guys are running 3/4 tons and 14k rated trailers.

Why? Are you trying to see how fast you go broke?

Honestly I understand what you are trying to do but the CDL is only a tiny piece of the quagmire of crap you need to do in order to do this legal. Regardless of what you do, CDL or not, you will need a DOT number, UCR, driver qualification files, medical card for driver, commercial inspections on truck and trailer, logs (e-log), commercial insurance, operating authority, etc.

You need all of this regardless if CDL or not. If you go into CDL territory you need in addition to the above drug testing for drivers, IFTA, and IRP. Thats it.

If you try to stay under the CDL threshold your truck and trailer will likely weigh 14k empty. Just how much can you haul with only 12k capacity? How long is a passenger vehicle going to last carrying those kinds of loads?

Get a CDL and get at least a medium duty truck. You will destroy a light duty truck in no time and won't be able to haul a lot of loads.

Right. The state is more interested in making sure you’re not hauling more than what you paid for the privilege of.
