Yeah they are inside. I don't know of a way to test them without opening it up. You may be able to get ahold of one of the guys that repair them and explain the situation with your location. The may give you some info for a fee.
I've always just bought a reman but they have to know how you want it set up. I think the last one I got was $1200.

Make sure you have fuel pressure and flow, the little gear on front of fuel pump went out on mine.
-
There is no fuel pressure, as the ECM does not open the Shut off valve.
-
ECM is the problem. It‘s now out of the truck and needs to be repaired.
clausland Thanks this. -
The ECM is back and the engine runs. My thanks to all members who did help me and my special thanks to spsauerland and KVB. These two guys did spend so much time to help me and finally the problem is solved now.
clausland, Rideandrepair, Isafarmboy and 5 others Thank this. -
At least some good news in these difficult times.
I'm glad it all worked out, and engine runs again.

ECM was fixed by a company in Illinois I have also used with great success. SIA Electronics | ECU Repair for all Makes and Models They do more than they list on website. Just fixed an reman ECM on a CM871 for me. They said many solder joints were subpar. Truck idles night and day smoother.
