Looking at buying a non egr truck . Found a 2000 Volvo with a rebuilt engine and trans ( with receipts ) and a super 10 speed . I have never driven a super 10 before . Not very familiar with the super 10 as opposed to a regular 10 speed . I haul very light loads . Pros and cons to a regular vs. the super 10 speed please .

lots on here would disagree but there was a earlier time on this forum that ALL agreed.

i never knew what the earlier members were talking about till i experienced it myself. but the super 10 is the worst transmission.

good when it's fresh and working properly. but once it wears down. it can really bang up the rear ends., they don't last very long.

I drove a Super10 for 10 years and loved it. We easily got a million miles out of them hauling mail when treated right but it was hard to get drivers who wanted to drive them. The biggest thing we had a hard time explaining was not letting the stick downshift the range at too high of a speed, it ruins the syncro.

Everyone says they are weak and poor transmissions but I drove them for years when I first started driving. Never had any problems.

We had them for years, no real problems that weren't driver caused. Most went of a million with no issues, not hard to get used to, UNLESS, you are constantly jumping from one truck to another with a straight 10.

Really easy tranny, only move the stick half as much, instead of running thru lower 5 and then going to higher 5 you just split EVERY hole.

Let's say you start out in 3rd (2nd hole low side) get moving and preselect 4th and run your rpm up, preselect 5th and move your stick to the 3rd hole run your rpm up and just preselect, now you are in 6th gear, but have only moved your stick twice. So on and so forth.

The biggest issues are tough to skip shift, and some people seem to get all fouled up when down shifting. I rather liked them for city driving and traffic jams, as you could just pick a hole if traffic was moving slow and just use your selector between the two gears, and never had to touch the clutch.

    Hope I didn't confuse you.

Food for thought……..drivers dislike a super 10, but LOVE a 13 speed, which is identical shift pattern and gear splitting (from 5th gear upwards). A 13 speed, you split the gears after you go thru the first 4, while a super 10, you split all the gears. :bootyshake:

Thought that the super would be kind of hard to get used to .

Ahhh, I know what yall are talking about now. Oh yeah. The first truck I ever drove back in the 70's had that. We always called it a 5 speed with a "dog". If you were bob tail, you just shifted it like a 5 speed.... put it in high range & shift it out.

I'm actually in a Volvo myself right now with a super 10 and i love it. In my opinion its a great transmission for a city driver. The only bad thing i can say is when i get on it sometimes, the gear won't catch right away when doing your split to go into a higher gear.
