I have a 91 379 with the same motor. Mine is a 893ci turbo'd engine with no electronics. I use a tablet with Big Roads log program. I have either 1,088,000 or 2,088,000 miles. Im told the speedo was replaced at 1,000,000 miles, but cannot confirm it. Because this is an older engine and with that older technology, Ive read that there are certain things to check throughout the years and PM's. The overall ride is much rougher than a newer truck too. Overall I'd say its a strong running truck but gets about 5mpg. Dont exceed 70mph.
379's, especially the long nose, are a respected and recognized vehicle. -
ii also have the chance to buy a 1991 kenworth with a n14-460 cummins. better motor??

Although I have been driving for many years, this is my first truck. So I cannot answer that question. Talk to other people with KW's.
Why are you focused on an older truck? -
$$$ they are both nice trucks.

Newer trucks cost more because of their youth and technology. Older are the same way. But what you gain by a lower purchase price may be lost in yr operating expenses. Example, if I was to have a newer truck I would actually (roughly) make about $20,000 a year more due to less fuel used. Thats a whole lotta truck payments. I bought this truck because it fell into my lap. "right place at the right time" I guess.
Ask around the forum. Get others thoughts. Call the shops where youll be getting work done, see what their charges are. I just want you to have as much info as possible. You can always discard the extra. -
All of the 379 Pete's are great trucks, a 93 will be showing its age with corrosion on the fuse panel and the door latch mechanisms/window regulators but that stuff is pretty easy to recondition. You will probably have to address the hood hinges and cowling seal as well.
The 3406B is a great engine, not as long a lifespan or as efficient as the pre emission CAT E-motors but pretty bullet proof and reliable, they can be rebuilt many times with no machine work except for counterboring the sleaves (which can be done by a mobile mechanic at your place once the heads off).
If you are reasonably handy this is a pretty safe combination to buy but ALL older trucks will have issues with failing air lines and rubbed through wiring harnesses as well as air valves that act up, someone who must pay a mechanic to address all of the little BS stuff will rarely ever do well buying an aged big rig.
But those who can deal with such problems quickly and on the fly will run rings around the new trucks that are parked at the dealership with regen problems
