Hi everyone out there, i am new in here and i got couple question about the truck that i planing to buy, so appreciate with all ur answer..

i never been with cummins b4, my last 3 years only bought truck with detroit engine, but i lost a lot of money on my last truck century 2006 14l detroit 13 sp, 800,000 mileage just couple week after i buy the truck then engine blow up, clutch broken, fuel injector no good, turbo leaking, EGR stop working, Vpod no good, etc... and i went to dealer to rebuild all of them, costing over 40 grand... just after couple week from sale date ( All sale as is)... bad luck here...

now i am so scare with new detroit 14l cause this and that etc ( after all thing build up MPG only 6.2-6.3 on I40 75000 lbs not happy while compare with my older truck 03 columbia 12.7)..

i planing to buy one more old truck: 2000 Century, 10sp, 3.58 ratio, N14 red top (not very sure this is redtop or not but i saw it said celect + behind the engine, can anyone confirm about this???) my question is how much it cost when this truck need to be overhaul inframe? turbo? fuel injector? and my last big question is: from 10sp with serial# S07-13103-000 507936A can we upgrade it to eastern fuller 13sp latter???
and how much MPG on this truck for 70,000 lbs when drive on I40 from east to west

anyways i know this is so many question on my thread but after 2006 truck that almost make me working free for 2 years and i am being so scare when buying wrong truck, hope some one out there who owned century N14 10 sp 358 ratio like my truck can give me advice b4 i buy this truck, thanks thanks thanks so much everyone...
    All advice welcome....

The N14 is a great engine, best below 500 HP, above that the heads squirm and wear the block. If it is a private sale, I would get it dyno'd, the CAC tested. Do a plug swap, on the diffs and transmission. Get the clutch inspected for % of life left. Ask for the full repair history.
To quiet the engine down if you buy it, get a piece of radiator hose, 3 ft about 3 inch cut a slot for the vent, and bungee cord it to the top of the valve covers. It works

    HopeOverMope Thanks this.

A 10 spd transmission is not upgradeable to a 13 spd. N 14 is a good motor, and with those specs should get decent mileage, depending on how it is driven. When buying a used truck always look and see how much blow by is coming out of the blow by tube. It is not a guarantee that you wont have problems if there is not excessive blow by, but excessive blow by does guarantee an overhaul in the near future.
