I’ve been looking for an ELD exempt truck and have found a 2002 model with a 1998 engine swapped in. Would this truck be ELD exempt since the 2002 models didn’t have any emissions equipment (that’s what I’ve read). It’s not a glider kit. Anyway, I’m way out of my depth as a lot has changed since I quit driving 25 years ago. Getting back in but don’t want to use an ELD. Thanks

The manufacture date of engine is all that matters, All manufactured before January 1, 2000, are exempt. Regardless of the year of Truck, or manufactured date, or in service date of Truck, as far as I know. Engine must have been swapped out, or is it a Glider? Built that way?

The truck would be exempt because the engine model year is before 2000. The truck may not be legal in some states though going from an 02 to a 98. Hopefully someone that knows better can chime in.

Since the emissions requirements, I think, were the same in '02 as in '98, the engine swap would be ok.

Not only that. Tons of people in Facebook trucking groups claim, that they install pre 2000 engines in newer trucks and nobody says anything to them at weigh stations. The most popular mod being putting Detroit series 60 in any year Cascadia

I thought 2002 was first year of EGR. So it might not be legal but nobody might not ever check. Also back then they premade all the engines they could before the switch. If the 2002 truck come from factory with pre 2000 engine it legal. If someone swapped engines and put in pre 2000 engine. It's probably not legal. I think any truck build on 2002 model year was EGR that was the first emissions years. I don't think it legal. But will anyone notice or check?

Pre EGR engines were built all the way to Nov 2002.

I know on a cat that you can get a print out with the build date. I would check with Detroit to see if they do the same.

Build date should be on the valve cover sticker. If not a new sticker can be had based on the actual serial #. A record of some sort, of the engines been changed, on file at the office, is all that’s required. In this case, it’s a grey area, as far as documentation. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. You bought it that way. Document that.
