    Hello everyone,

I have an 05 Columbia that loses power; drops to about 30-40 psi on the oil gage. Truck loses power and jerks when you let off the gas pedal and then you suddenly press the gas pedal again. As you press the gas pedal again, the truck slowly creeps up to the necessary RPM. Took it to a trusted mechanic, checked it out, and based on his diagnosis it was not the following:

    • EGR Valve
    • VPOD
    • Electrical Problem
    • Back pressure from muffler
    • Oil filter, diesel, oil filter, oil (He changed all of that himself)

About 2 months ago I had a Freightliner Dealer change the head and the head gasket because it was smoking coolant.

Trusted Mechanic tells me that it might be an injector, but recommends that I get a different diagnostic somewhere else.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be? Any input is much appreciated, Thanks.

You didn't mention what engine you have, but my columbia with a Series 60 detroit was doing the same thing as you describe and it turned out to be a faulty waste-gate.

I assume since you said "its not V-pod or EGR" its a Detroit, it could very well be an injector, but I have to ask why does the "trusted mechanic" want you to take it somewhere else? If he is not equiped to properly check electrontic injectors, then how did he eliminate the V-pod/EGR? Are you getting a CEL? Are you getting any exhaust smoke when it acts like this?(if its smokin its broken)any differant sounds? does the turbo sound louder/quieter when it does it?does it shake/vibrate when it does it. If you have an algea problem it will plug a brand new filter up almost immediatly.Once "it creeps up to the necessary RPM" does the oil pressure return to normal? The "pop from intake" does it pop then lose power or does it pop repeatedly while it has no power?Has anyone checked for a boost leak?

Yeah it's a Detroit (DDS60). The mechanic whom I first took the truck with suggested to take the truck with the dealer because he didn't have the machine to analyze the engine without actually running the truck (don't know what it's called). On the passenger side of the engine block close to the turbo, there's a small mechanical arm that pops up when the truck is turned on, and that he said is the indication of whether or not the V-pod is working correctly. I have a picture below show this mechanical component.

Mechanic did mention something about there being some black smoke that comes out. But I myself have not seen the smoke when the truck loses power. The turbo sounds louder when this happens and the truck does vibrate as if you were forcing the truck to go uphill with a low RPM (11-12). The oil pressure does return to normal (~50-55psi) as it regains power. I guess I shouldn't have said as it goes back up to the necessary RPM, because this only happens when you let off the gas pedal (even for a split second), and then you step on the gas pedal again.

Oh yeah, what do you mean by CEL?

    Thanks

CEL= Check engine lamp= Possible derate of power by the ECM. I would rule out the Throttle position sensor (TPS) and wiring/plug connections.

    CEL-check engine light
If its smoking its probably the EGR/ V-Pod, they are electronicly controlled
My 53 yr old eyes aren't what they used to be but I believe what you have circled in red is the waste gate,it needs to be properly adjusted.
30-40psi oil pressure @ 1100 rpm sounds normal to me.
Here again my eyes aren't what they used to be, but I would check the CAC(charge air cooler) and all its plumbing for boost leaks. The blue CAC hose in your picture, the front clamp does not look like the spring is completely down and there appears to be a gap in the conection at the pipe. Also that is the "hot" side and the hose should be orange like the one behind it.A lot of guys use blue on the "hot side" and get away with it but not for very long,if you replace the hose get a orange one and change the clamps also.Make sure all the clamps are tight when the engine is stone cold(been off for at least 12 hrs).Recheck weekly until they stay tight(you will be suprised how loose they get).I cant figure out how to put the circle on the picture, but the blue hose is the big blue one(3") in the bottom right corner of the picture.I agree with your mechanic you need to have it hooked up to a computer to get a proper diagnosis, any autherized detroit dealer can do this(for a fee).
