We have replaced 7 starters in this truck, our own mechanics can't find the problem, We took the truck to an outside mechanic and he could not find the problem, we then took it to Volvo and they could not find the problem. The cylinoid wires on the starter keep burning. We have replaced the ignition switch, relays, wires and have also by passed the ignition with a manual push button start. it will run for several days and sometimes 3 weeks and then it happens again. Any ideas out there.

How are the batteries? Connections are clean and tight? A starter will always draw X amount of watts. If voltage is low, it will start to pull more amps. Amps = heat. Heat kills electrical parts.

I had the same problem with my 2005 it turned out to be the main wire going from the battery to the starter, mine looked ok but must have had some corrosion inside

Gotta be a wiring issue. I'd replace the main wire to the battery, and also remove and clean all grounds to frame and engine. Also clean all battery connections.

I know this is kind of rough but would give you a starting point.

Disconnect wire going to starter. The starter is already grounded just by being bolted to the engine. Run one jumper cable from the starter into the cab. Run another cable from the + terminal on the battery into the cab then touch the two together when ready to start.

what kind of engine is in this truck that would be my first question, if cummins does it have icon and if volvo does it have the tas system. both of those separate systems which are idle management will burn out starters have seen it a bunch of times before. as you drive the starter just engages and it burns out. need to see y the starter is burning out not just replace it obviosly where are you located out of any chance you got any lanes in the chicagoland area u can stop by my shop if it's electrical ill find it.

That sounds logical. Fault in ECM programming telling it to start when its running. You'd think that would be noticeable though.

That idle control is weird stuff too. It takes over when you idle, changes engine speeds, doesn't seem like it does a regen, but it works, just says " Clean idle engaged ".

I just took mine by Volvo/Vanguard in Phoenix. Those guys are about as good as it gets I think. Very fair on the price, extremely knowledgeable & not afraid to share it, and fast. That service manager certainly seems to know the game on the emission stuff, and has an outline for preventative maintenance. Yea it's $1600 every 18 to 20 months to maintenance the DPF, but it is what it is. You can give them the truck for 2 days, spend the money, or wait until your at someone's mercy 1000 miles from home, probably with a late load now too, and a God only knows how much $$$ repair, that may or may not resolve the issue.

They have 670 near me that's for sell, that is an absolute friggin bargain that has me so wound up, I wished I'd not seen it. I have to stay near the house. I have the money, and the credit, it's painful lol.
