i am new to the business (broker) and was asked to quote 3 lanes. I went to my carriers (they have carried for the shipper before) and asked what's reasonable. I quoted all 3 lanes and shipper said I was to high and we couldn't do business. Before quoting, I checked the average going 12 month rate and pay and was a little higher than average. So I quoted lower than what was posted in agreement with my carriers. My carriers are family members and a few of their buddy's.

Shipper responds, "still way to high and can get loads moved by solid trucks and brokers I currently work with." Basically working for pennies. My quote was ranged from $1.85 - $2.03.

I read and hear everywhere that brokers are rip offs and not willing to work and be honest. I guess I'm one of the few that are trying to be. Not sure, but would like advice on how to better understand so I can get the shippers business and pay carriers what they deserve.

FYI...I also have a good paying 9-5, so this isn't my only source of income as of now.

Not every job is for everyone. Focus on your "good paying 9 to 5". I'm tired of people that don't know the first thing about the trucking industry trying to get their 'piece of the pie' in the laziest form.
You can go to trucking school...drive a truck for a minimum of one year in 48 states...dispatch for a trucking company for a minimum of one year...and THEN maybe think about brokering freight.

What are the lanes? Cities, Miles, Weight, commodity? I can tell you what rate those loads are moving for

Those who pay for transportation services, appreciate the service just as much as an office building management appreciates the service of their landscaping contractors. As minimal as possible. The less they pay the better.

I am doing dry freight, not reefer, but with NM being a very slow freight area, I would think those loads probably get moved for $1.5-1.7

Agreed with Dune-T. These lanes are definitely cheap. Unfortunately there's a very strong possibility that you have the opportunity to quote this because the customer is a cheap ####### who allows literally every carrier who calls him to quote and will drop his existing carriers for a .01 per mile rate decrease. People like this are basically never worth working with as a broker. They do not want to pay you to find the trucks they want the trucks to pay the broker for access to his insanely ####ty freight. It's a great way to make minimum wage (if that).

I appreciate all perspectives. I found a mentor who's been helping and he said the same exact thing. From my understanding this shipper is having trouble covering these loads. We (Broker and carrier) can't work for free. Trying to be reasonable for all parties involved.

Lol customer is having trouble covering those loads but isn't willing to pay to have them covered....

What's a brokers response to that? As a carrier I tell people what I'll do it for, & if my price is too high.... They're welcome to keep shopping around: I have more work than I can cover most of the time anyway.
