You don't have to drive 8 hours straight to get dinged by this stupid rule. There in lies the problem. You could stop 6 times inside of 7 hours to walk the dog at 10-20 minutes each and you're still not considered safe to drive past 8 hours. WTF?

Wrong. There is no requirement for either a pre trip or post trip. Just must be satisfied all the required things work.
Both should be logged as done A decent pre takes 15 minutes. Post trip is fill out a dvir if needed, that's it.

Personally since I'm local, I do a good pre, and a walk around while fueling at end of shift.

You are like others have said. Here is the actual regulation in regard to the rest break:
(ii) Rest breaks. Except for drivers who qualify for either of the short-haul exceptions in §395.1(e)(1) or (2), driving is not permitted if more than 8 hours have passed since the end of the driver's last off-duty or sleeper-berth period of at least 30 minutes.

I was taught that you need to log 15 minutes for a pre-trip and flag a post trip which can be shown off duty

Minimum PTI time logged [and when] is more a company policy thing than an FMCSA thing. Do what you have to do to stay off of the radar in any internal log audit office you may or may not have.

These policies no doubt were developed after past audit fines and written "recommendations" that accompanied the audit violation notice were received.

And every auditor has their own unique world view and way of interpreting the FMCSA guidance and text.

Well, can't flag a post as off duty as you are working. But the fact it takes less than 15 minutes and at the end of the day means the only way it will ever be brought up is if you are in a wreck or royally piss off an officer.

Back in the paper days, I always flagged my post off duty. With elogs my post tends to be 5-6 minutes or so.

My company has us to do a 15 min post trip and a quick pre-trip. The thinking is that if an issue is found you can take care of it easier during your 10 hour break instead of finding an issue in the morning and being late for delivery.
