When in a motel its off duty, you may be asked to show a receipt from the motel. If in a truck stop its best to show both sleeper birth and off duty while takin a 34. Its a simple rule dont try to complete it.

you can have both at a truckstop as most people can't sleep for 34 hrs at a time
-
As long as you stay above line 3, you can go back and forth between lines 1 and 2 all you want.
Line 2 is Off-duty in the sleeper. Line 1 is Off-duty everywhere else.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
And to be really legal, don't make any entries in your log from the time you start your 34 off until you finish your 34 off, because picking up your log book to make an entry from line 1 to 2 or vice-versa means you just went on duty and negated the straight 34 off. It won't make a difference as long as you don't have an "incident" while parked and have to prove anything later on.

Just tell 'em you went on a bender and were passed out the entire time.
-
I think you're picking nits that don't exist.
Similar circumstance.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
It all pertains to being "off duty". You can do anything you want when "off duty". You do not have to sleep or "rest". You can hit all the bars, chase all the women, eat steak, see the sights, tell truck driver lies, whatever......Just can't do anything truck related. (legally)
-
Sure you can; drive the truck, take phone calls and fill out log pages... all off-duty.

I guess we always need to complicate simple things. How about this scenario? You are not require by the carrier to complete the the log book, you are required by the federal government to complete it. Since the federal government doesn't pay you to complete the log book you are not working for wages while you are doing the log. I do believe that the only work you have to log, is work at the direction of the carrier and other work for wages, so no change of duty to "on duty not driving" occurs. All is well in the world.

Consider the original "intent" when the Federal boys implemented the log book back in the '30's. Today, there are grey areas. Subject to interpretation. Here's one I find amusing; you can drive a CMV while off duty to the restaurant or hotel or store, right ? So, when driving this CMV while off duty, does that mean you are exempt from doing a pre-trip ? And if you do a pre-trip, you certainly are on line 4, right ? But wait a second, you're on a 34 re-set, driving a CMV to the motel, which is legal and doing a pre-trip while "off duty", which should be line 4, which would negate your 34 off, dang, I'm confused !
