when you back off the fitting on #3 from front on the injection pump the sounds quites down substantially to the point that you think youve fixed the problem as well as less diesel smoke and smell its defeintly diesel as its like unburnt pure raw fuel that you can smell when engine is operating on all 6 cylinder but not to the point where its spitting out diesel fuel wet out the exhaust just real strong odor of unburnt fuel.

also refering to someones post where they say having the cylinder on head and pump capped off will be problems with hydraulic pressure and pump WHY? wouldnt the pump work less as its only supplying fuel to 5 instead of 6 cylinders i figure if theres no fuel on the cylinder with the issue then its not in compression its still getting lubricated by oil splash and mains and rods so it wont lock up the piston and since its not in compression there will be less friction in the sense of noise and piston fighting against trying to bind due to compression, hopefully someone can understand me on this one.

If it's scored you will see increased blowby and some smoke at the crankcase vent and oil filler tube with the cap off. Low cylinder pressure explains the unburn't fuel.

just for record when i purchased this truck about 3 months ago ive been starting her up and warming her up weekly.
when i purchased truck i had to drive it to me in the condition it was in with engine noise for about 6miles on a local interstate and it builds boost, goes thru all gears fine, didnt appear to be low on power lots of black smoke when i hammered down on her till about 1800rpm then i just cruised her home with out so much beating truck only blew black smoke when i was heavy on throttle other then that no other smoke or noises i got her up to about 65mph and actually didnt here the noise if not very lil audible to hear at 65mph. then wen she got back down to idle you would hear noise again. doesnt turn off with no issues, starts on first hit even when cold, and doesnt billow out any smoke when started or cold started. -
as for blowby she has some but not as bad as some newer DETROIT engines ive had before this truck is an 87 FLC 120 some blowby but nothing out of the ordinary or no smoke show that any old cat would show. you can put your hand over oil fill on valve cover or on the side and i dont feel any heavy compression kicking back or spitting oil out when i cover with my hand.

would there be a way of getting around capping the pump maybe routing the line to dump fuel into one of the fuel tanks? this would leave the injection pump still pumping fuel into tank and not closing it off completly.
some people tell me that the cat will make it to shop if capped off as long as i dont pull any loads with it.
i wish this was something i could fix myself i just dont have the know how of how to put it back to gether. -
i wish i could pull 6mpg out of my flat top shes given me 5mpg at best thats at 67mph at 1550 rpm
i have one of them aircells, new filters air and fuel. other then that theres not to much more i can do for economy really, except ad a double sleeper with roof fairing or a turbo wing which im not to fond of the look on my model truck.
other then throwing a good ole detroit s60 in there im stuck when it comes down to fuel econ. -
