3406e in a 95 w900 with a 15 speed. What is everyone seeing for operation temp under a load? Water and oil? Is 200 on coolant and 175-200 on oil too much? Only had it depower me once but has made me nervous? Do these motors run this hot? If not where should I start with diagnosing my problem? New air filters in it.

Not awful. I'm 180-205 on coolant and 165-175 on 15w40. 75000+ on I-81 in NY.

Oil is usually a bit hotter. Your temps are good, a bit on the cool side under a good pull actually.

Gotta take ambient air temperature into consideration. the hotter outside air will raise running temps a few degrees

Mine runs between 190 and 210 on the water.
Fan comes on at 208 and goes off at 198.
Runs about 180 on oil temp.

Cat thermo stats start to open at 185° and are supposed to be fully open at 192° if I recall correctly.

My fan use to come on right under 200 when I had the stock 5EK file on a 94. Now Im running a 1LW 550 brakesaver file and I seen the coolant reach 200 and the alarm went on but no fan yet so I turned it on manually. I'm guessing its the file. The 1LW's must run warmer than a 5EK.

I put a 5ds file into a used ecm. I kept my old ecm original for a spare. Either the new ecm or the file does not support engine fan for coolant temperature. It does work on manual or with A/C pressure. I put a 200° fan switch in.

Diesel dave. Sounds like the problem you are having may not be in the file. I would suspect that you have a sensor/gauge not reading correctly. Cat usually turns the fan on @208°. I have a friend with the same issue new radiator & condenser, he is always running with the fan on to keep it cool. I think his gauge is reading high maybe 20°. I will check into it and let you know what I find.

My 96 5EK is completely unmodified. It gets such good fuel economy that I will not touch it. The fan has always come on at 208 and gone off at 198. The High temp warning for this truck comes on at 220-225 or so (broken hose). It will sit and idle over night at 190 and usually runs about 200 pulling. I'm sure it could use a new radiator now too but that's pretty much the way it's always run. I ran yesterday in (feels like) 110 deg. weather and it did the same thing all day long. Never went over 208. I have an isx cummins that does the same thing too except that it runs a lot higher oil temps than the 5ek 3406e. The oil temps are always around 180 on my 3406e.
