Just thought I'd share pics of what happened to our 5ek at about 1.1 million. What sucks is when I bought the truck around 900,000 miles it just had an in frame with a rebuilt head. The crank broke at the #3 rod throw.

Been a member here for awhile and done lots of searching and reading, and the knowledge I know now I wished i would of replaced the crankshaft damper prior to this happening, as it looked original on this engine. I know that some the 5ek and 6ds with high miles and high horsepower were prone to breaking the crank. This engine is set at 475 and it does run really strong, so much that it stays with my other truck with a tuned mxs.

So anyways it needed a crank. I had them replace the number 3 hole just in case when the crank broke it didn't shock it. The head was fine along with the block so I got lucky. They cleaned everything up good, pulled the cam and inspected it, also had them reseal the front plate as that was leaking oil everywhere. I had them replace the oil cooler, turbo (which had some chipping on the blades and some play), new bearings, and of course crankshaft damper.

Lots of labor involved as the engine had to come out. 26 g's and I was back on the road. Been running over a year and half and still running strong.

Wow 26k that's taking it In the shorts for sure. Full out of frame with new head and Inframe is less than that at my shop. Just completed one with new crank for 18200. That's a new crank and turbo as well. Oil cooler water pump and air compressor while we were there. You have it done at dealer or cat?

The work was done at cat. I think their hourly rate was around 130/hr. This place has a great mechanic that I like and knows his cat engines so was comfortable having the work done there.

That's the difference is 130 an hour that's crazy how much dealers and places like cat and cummins charge. Glad to hear it worked out for you and it's running well.

    SAR Thanks this.

5ek had a known crank issue. I am sure you know this now, and Cat warrantied them for 10 years if you broke one, as they knew it was a problem.

Your crank dampener most likely didn't have anything to do with the crank breaking.
Don't believe everything Bruce M tries to sell you. Smart guy but also good salesman!!
