Our company now owns a Freightliner Cascadia Day cab. The question I am asking is how often should the 5th wheel be lubed/greased? We very rarely have to unhook from our trailer we pull. We stay strictly local only running 120 miles per day. We have one mechanic telling us that since we are local that it needs to be greased 2 times per week. This seems a bit extreme. Another mechanic is telling us since we run only local and the low amount of miles, once every 3 months would be sufficent.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Put a slick disc on it and never grease.

Minimum would be once a week, a slick disk is the way to go on local..... If you can see nice shiney metal, and gouges you waited too long

I put a little grease on mine every 10,000 miles. I drive 150 - 250 a day. Never had a problem. Flip it about once a year and grease the mechanisms. Replace the springs as necessary. They now make a spray 5th wheel grease thats great. I have a Fontaine with plastic \ teflon bushings. Check for wear every 6 months. Fontaine and Holland have online videos.

That is very little use, so every couple weeks should be more than enough. After doing it for a few months, you might find that is too often, and go down to every three or four weeks. Even if you run 7 days a week, that is only 840 miles per week, and with the same trailer behind it all the time, you won't be hooking up to some unknown dry trailer.

Twice a week sounds right. If you unhook and it looks dry, you need grease.
The truck handles alot better with a greased fith wheel.
Give it some time and you will see. It will be easier to to drive and stay where you want it. A dry fith wheel is like driving in a side wind, it will wear you out fast. -
I may go 6 months without unhooking my trailer and I had the slick disk and really liked it. The problem I had is when I did have to drop the trailer the ring that holds the disk on comes loose every time. Since my trailer sits inches off the ground it is a pain to put another lock ring on by myself without getting covered in grease. I may go with a permanently mounted disk to the 5th wheel instead. If you
go the grease route you probably will want to do it every week or so or you will end up with a dry top plate.

I do it weekly as I drive on gravel roads fairly often.
I drop my trailers on the weekend and can see the difference between weeks with a lot of gravel miles and weeks with little gravel miles.
Some times the fifth wheel is bone dry, others it looks like I just did it yesterday.skellr Thanks this. -

even if you have slick disk you need to put grease on trailer king pin and under plate locking mechanism. 5th wheels with oem permanent mounted slick lube plates are good ones . Holland makes them.
