Where I'm at the drivers are on commission. Most weeks I wotk around 35 hours in the winter and gross around 800. In the summer I work about 40 and gross around 1000. Is there better pay out there or should I stick it out where I am? I don't know how much I'd enjoy nights running LTL but when I hear of guys making 80k+ and not having to pay for insurance etc it makes you want to move to LTL......

80k is common but only after a few years in (any) company. You are not going to walk right into a linehaul bid where you can pocket this much right off the bat. This year I should scratch 60k and I'm not even part of the extra board I'm just a dockworker with a CDL. Guys with 5 or more years of seniority have a medium to low tier bid and make 70-75k. Top seniority guys usually scratch 100k or more, not just at ABF. I don't work at ABF, I'm just giving an example.

Freight is picked up and delivered during the day in 48"s, 53"s, 45"s, liftgates, pups, etc. This is called P&D (pick up and delivery) or just "city". They are paid by the hour, some companies pay overtime at different levels. Some don't. Those shifts usually start at 6 or 7 am. Come back 10-12 hours later, sometimes 14. You would do dozens of stops during the day.

At night that freight it is hauled from terminal to terminal by guys pulling doubles. This is called Linehaul. Driving is paid by the mile. Some guys work the dock as well. Dock work is paid by the hour.

Some companies do linehaul with 53 footers. Some companies have a few linehaul runs during the day. Usually the old timers that have been there forever take them.

    Linehaul pays more.

Some companies have guys that "run wild". Guys that will drive from terminal to terminal with out coming home that same night, always getting a hotel. If you ever see a tiny single axle daycab parked at a hotel, that's what it is.

Almost all LTL companies have teams, some run wild like at an OTR company and go home "whenever". Some do this but come back on friday night for the weekend. Some have a set run (for example: Memphis to Miami and back, forever and ever). LTL teams usually are the highest paid of all.

In this part of the industry everything is given on bids, which are given in order of seniority. Hence why when you start you won't make 80k. But if you have enough patience you will.

In some companies layoffs are very common, in others it is a revolving door, others are very stable.

Not all LTL companies pay the same. Some have pensions as well as a 401k. Some are union, some are not. Some have horrible equipment, some have brand new trucks. Some are stuck at 62mph, some are ungoverned.

It's a very varied world out there.
