In the old days we figured 900-1000 degrees was time to start backing out of it. I bought this truck from a friend and it wants to go to 1100-1150 in just a minor pull. I keep backing out of it. I owned several 6NZ's new and never had this problem. I'm wondering if maybe my air charge cooler is going bad?

Test ATAAC, if nothing found, pull exhaust at turbo and check for turbine fin damage. You may have had an exhaust insert start to disintegrate and pass through turbo. Also make sure you don't have too much restriction in exhaust system.

Is my thinking right about staying in that 900-1000 degree range? This friend seems to think 1100-1150 is OK.

I find with mine (pulling 140,000 lbs.) in warm air temps (say 70F or higher) if I try to run it along at less than 1500 it will tend to climb up there. But, it's "juiced up" if you know what I mean. Now, in -15 to -20 temps, even if I "lug" it a bit below 1450 it won't see 1000. So, things you need to take into account, how hard are you working it, is it hot where you are, what rpm range are you running, how much boost are you getting, and has it been juiced up at all? I also don't feel good seeing it get to 1100 although many say that won't hurt it.

Basiclly I run at 80 K or less So it really is not working hard. It puts out a little over 20# boost and is dead stock. I try to stay on the high end of 1300 to 1400rpm's. I'm going to get the CAC tested and take a look at the turbo. The turbo is some kind of aftermarket supposedly for a 550. A little smaller to build boost faster, this is what I was told by the former owner. He acted like I was wasting my time and money fixing the pyro, said it ran cool. Cool in my opinion is not 1100+.

You have not mentioned where the pyrometer is located.

If it's post turbo that sounds high.

Not a Big Rig but I installed a Gal Backs turbo kit on an 86 K5 Chevy (full size) Blazer with a 6.2 diesel.
If I remember right Banks did not what over 1200* you would have to back out of it or down shift to get the rpm up, not lug motor and the temp would come right down. Think boost was 8 psi, max of 12 pis if you got deep into it with a load.

With the install you had to turn the pump up, more fuel. Little after install I had to have pump rebuilt had about 100K on stock pump. When rebuilt I told them of the turbo and they said they knew to turn it up. Once back on the EGT was higher than before, my thinking was they turned it up a bit more than I did when I first did the install.
I also remember the paper saying if EGT was to high all the time the pump was turned up too much.
I don’t remember if the sender was before or after the turbo, sadly no longer have the truck.

BTW it did not have any pollution equipment on it from the factory and a mechanical pump, one reason I bought it new.
So could your pump be running rich and why the temp is high? Then again maybe that is normal for your big rig?

The thermocouple is behind the turbo.

20#'s is real low for a 550 mine ran 34#'s so you have a boost leak some where.
mine would run 1100 but it was pushing 850hp stock would still get over 1000
I have had mine to 1300 before not good but it wont kill it. hope this helps
