This is part of the problem. You are waiting to the last moment. On average, I am booked a minimum of two weeks out. You call three days before ready to ship, your going to get an answer of not available.

So now your in a less than desirable situation.
    Your choices are limited.

I mean, I book three days out or less plenty often. And I do high value, time sensitive open deck freight.
On the other hand: nobody ever saved money booking me like that.

That is good for you. You have the capacity at the right time, the shipper needs it moved. Each of you now have agreed value.

Good way to go as long as you do not mind sitting on your ### when we have a last min issue that causes a 2-3 day delay

How often does something delay product for shipping? The fact that you bring the subject up, implies that it may be quite often.

We do include stipulations as to what is acceptable I.e. no hot shots, etc.

Have not tried stipulating as to the carrier to transport, & I will definitely keep that in mind.
To be fair though, when we do contact the direct carrier for quotes, I think they would certainly rather have it on their trucks, but again it comes down to availability.

Some times the carrier can make more money brokering a load out than loading their own truck. That's why you insist that they haul it, or at least get your approval before brokering to another carrier. That gives you the opportunity to see for yourself if the truck being sent meets your requirements.

Where you're located, shouldn't be too difficult finding trucks. We always have trucks in the area looking for freight.

Some truth here, a company may not want to send equipment into an area that they have little or no business in. They would have more profit in brokering that delivery to a non company truck.

There’s a few of us O/O that haul the material I do. I just spoke with the guard about a couple younger brothers who haul the same material, seems they don’t haul as much as they use to..... give a customer a smooth quality job, and they call you more and more.....
