After 25 years in this business I finally had enough at a shipper. I had an eleven o'clock appt. to pick up a load. Checked in at 1015 and was given a door. I researched this place online and saw the horrible reviews so I was somewhat prepared.

At three o clock I walked in the shipping office to use the restroom. I inquired about the load and was told one truck ahead of me and should be loaded within the hour. At six fifteen still no action while several other trucks had come and gone. I checked in again to see if something was wrong and was told in a very nasty tone that I was not a priority. Something happened inside of me when they said that and I walked out to my truck and took their glad hand lock off and threw it on the counter and left.

Not sure if I will lose my job or not but everyone has their breaking point. 8 hrs of wasting my time to haul their freight and I'm not a priority. I do my part. I show up on time with good equipment and a positive attitude and you think that would be sufficient. Not anymore.

Everybody has such a breaking point, on a given day. Some days we can be pushed a bit further than other days. What makes those deals worse is you dick around there in a place like Arlington on a Friday since a 10:00 appt ... they finally get you loaded with bills at 17:30 and you have to cross the entire metroplex at rush hour because there is no place to sleep and you have to utilize your remaining 3 hours to make the appt on the other end..

I've done that at an International Paper before. It was at the location in Texas, somewhere near Texarkana but I can't remember the city. They told me to be there at 1 pm. I arrived at 12:30. The load was going to Kansas City and I had started my clock at around 11:30. I waited and even took a nap for 3 hrs. The route to Kansas City was going to be a lot of back roads. Waiting any longer meant I wasn't going to make the 7:30 am appt the next morning, friday at that. I called my company and told them I was leaving. Those joker's finally called me at 7:30 that evening ready to give me a door. I was in Arkansas by that point

To me it sounds like you're not one of those is modern truckers that likes getting paid for sitting. And to 2nd I think if you get fired you would have about 10 people calling you a day later for a job. And 3 good thing you had the the guts to stand up to them for making you sit for so long in a nice way.

Those glad hand locks are what many utilize to try and get away with BS like this. They would have you think it is about safety, but probably not. They're generally used to "buy lots of time" and keep you imprisoned and beholden to them. Good for you for breaching their glad hand lock. Now they'll be looking for a more secure system :biggrin_25523: They didn't have you locked in at the dock? Any way to beat those?

I think you "Did a Good Job" 25 years in ,I doubt they fire you.Its BS,especially when you had an appointment and other trucks have come and gone.Ive threatened shippers with "our company charges detention pay $100 an hour after 2 hours". Worked at a Sysco ,I was delivering to.We had a hilarious driver at my old company. He would tell them,if its not fully loaded in 2 hours,Im leaving(and he would)He pallet jacked 6 pallets out once and fled. When delivering to shopping malls,he would leave there boxes in the corridor(by their back door....if they didnt open the door after 5 minutes. The Bosses would ask him later"You didnt scan their boxes or get a sigature? He would just break out in "maniacal laughter for 2 or 3 minutes". Finally Canned him.

One thing I liked about working in the oilfield was they were always happy to see you and needed that #### yesterday so they rolled out the red carpet most of the time

You're right. I told dispatch they could keep their detention pay as I make my money rolling down the road. I was as respectful as I could be given the situation.
