    In the freight environment we are in now I have no problem telling a shipper " get it loaded or I'm leaving ! ...done it twice in the last 6 month's now and they got the hint .
    The ball is in our court now!

    When I started driving and worked for a mega, I would get loads like this frequently. How your employer handles these situations is more important than how you react to them. If your dispatcher doesn't care if you waste a day sitting around making no money and wants you to wait no matter what, then it's time to find a new job. I gave the mega company 6 months, and when I finally came to the realization that they could care less if I can make a living or not, I left and never looked back.

    Exactly. I don't have near 25 years of exp like the OP or hell even close to TripleSix, but I do have a clean record and experience hauling a variety of product via various trailers and I've come to realize what I'm worth, in the last several months. I just won't take bs in any shape, or form. There was a time when I kept my head down and just "went along with it" but those days are over. One's got to know their worth because if you don't, you'll be walked on for life. Good on the OP, I would of done the same thing.

    I'm ecstatic that I'm not swinging doors and banging docks anymore.

    As you noted, if you work in the oil patch they are HAPPY to see you. It's a rare event not to be greeted with a "Yes Sir!" or "How do you want that 38K lb blowout preventer placed on your deck, Boss?"

    Sure, pipe yards can be an all day affair, but I don't mind getting paid to sleep at $50 an hour.

    Dry van work sucks, especially grocery warehouses, with lumpers taking their sweet time. Someone mentioned a paper load. I had 23 hours IN THE DOCK at a Boise Cascade mill in Alabama a few years ago. Of course I got detention, but only eight hours at $15 an hour. My poor trainee got nothing.

    I'm finally popping my oilfield cherry starting next Monday, after being on the fence about it for a year. Won't bother me a bit if I show up and folks are delighted to see me, as opposed to sitting at a warehouse like posts I've read on here.

    Another thing to thing about, for those of you that aren't paid a fixed amount per mile:

    Recently in another thread a forum member, that had been reluctant to install an ELD, noted that now he has MUCH MORE leverage. If a customer screws him over with detention, he can put the squeeze right back on them.

    The clock is ticking (except for those in exempt trucks). Use this to your advantage to get higher rates.

    If I am looking for a backhaul I rarely waste time on any load that tarps, or any load picking up at a shipper that I know takes their sweet time. Nor will I ever pick up a load that has receiving closed on weekends, etc. Far better to let them pound sand and boogie back to actual high paying freight.

    Oilfield rates are going up. I recently ran a load 460 miles at a rate 40% above this time last year. No backhauls worth a ####, so I deadhead back yesterday. That put me in position for two local hauls today generating over $6/mile to the truck for all miles.

    Tomorrow I get almost $4/mile for another 500 mile run. There won't be any games with glad hand locks or any snooty receptionists.
