I am not surprised. Truckers have called that style of loading suicide for decades.
Ive hauled my fair share. And once in a while lives depended on what decision I made now and then. Mine or theirs. Because I made every allowance when running suicide loads I managed to have a escape so that both myself and "They" the person in front has life as well.
I support this message, It is blunt and straight to the point. But... for some that choice has to be made. And most people will choose themselves in the semi knowing what kind of death or worse awaits them.
Ive already settled the question a long time ago when I was in training with my first suicide coil. The trainer said to me, son... if you ever have someone get in your way and you think you fixing to kill them... try to pick one end or the other of their car and chop it at the corner. MAYBE they will be spun away and live.
That particular mantra and solution seriously simplified my decision making when that time came up a time or two. They can always yell about a destroyed car. But they cannot do anything once someone dies because that is seriously that for all concerned.Zeviander, Grubby, rolls canardly and 1 other person Thank this. -
I think this article and Daisey need to get a clue. If that coil is secured to standards there is no way in hell it will leave that trailer. You should be able to flip it clear over and not loose that coil. Chains have a tinsel strength of 70k each, put on 5 of those and that coil ain't gonna move.

Can you show me the proper procedure to tie those coils down. I have been told many different ways. What is the right way. -
I'm guessing at some point we will see you back on here complaining that you was fired after you had a 4wheeler slam on their brakes and your coil come lose and rolled into the cab
-
That’s right. Only one I ever saw come off was likely not secured and it unravelled in the ditch near Vermillion Bay On. May still be there on north side of highway near the granite quarry
If you can’t tie knots tie lots

NO,Not true.......
5/16 chain will snap,Even 7-8 chain on a 45k coil if you virtually come to a stop via hitting (rearending) another truck....That Coil will break loose.
I Use 3/8 these days AND 1/2 inch when I started..........
Should be illegal to secure coils with 5/16brsims, stwik, Grubby and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ya, ok buddy....... If you get cut off, whatever and have to hit the brakes hard enough force multiplies, you could throw 15 chains on and Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyit will still break. I've seen it happen.
Don't believe everything you see in text books or trucker academyGrubby and Streetroddreams Thank this. -

As far as the claim it will never break loose. I say HELL NO.. IT WILL BUST OUT if given half a chance at impact.
I throw everything on those loads. Especially the giant 52000 pounders on my Ravens. Those loads were pretty righteous in the day... something on the order of 24 feet long, 8 something high half inch rolled plate sheet.
To my dying day I will never forget those. espeically the behavior of that truck coming out of Hammond IL/IN on a high flyover at about 8 mph curved ramp which was about what the balance was to keep it still. Even then that whole thing rocked gently seeking to either go over that side or fall over this side.Zeviander, cke and stayinback Thank this.
