I drive for a regional (650 drivers) LTL. Some guys are taping over the ABS lights when they're constantly on or flashing. As I'm linehaul, sometimes they get handed off to me. I note it in the pre trip and red tag it at the home terminal. Anyone else even HEARD of people doing this? Management and dispatchers act like it's no big deal. I'm retiring in about a year or so and probably don't want to die on this hill. It just sems crazy. What do others think?

It's an equipment violation and if DOT finds it the driver will get a PSP violation that stays on your record for 3 years.
ABS light should come on for a few seconds and go dark if everything is working properly. Driving with a faulty ABS system is a violation. It's not a big deal to the people who won't get a violation on their record. They will happily suggest you volunteer for the violation as they go home for the night collecting a salary that doesn't vary based on DOT inspections.silverspur and snowlauncher Thank this. -
I had this often also. The drivers before me, they cutted the "ABS light cable" to the ABS lamp. For me it is OK when they do it this way and drive self.
But I think also when the driver droppes the trailer with out reporting this, then it is sabotage.

Sadly drivers like to destroy equipment so they dont need to spend the time to get it fixed or because they are bored.
One guy where my dad works was sticking a knife into the speakers on every truck he got to stop the following too close alarm as an example.
That said eventually they will get caught.silverspur Thanks this. -
I have one of my trailer abs sensor needing adjustment and my light is always on ... Mechanic said its slap on the wrist... But all it takes is one good cop

The ABS light staying on just means the system is working and shows there is a fault that needs to be addressed eventually. Notate it in your pre-trip and keep rolling. The geniuses who cover up the light or cut the wire are risking being cited for an inoperable required lamp.

I would kick that behavior up the chain beyond pre/post.
at the least it can be a safety meeting topic. oth its either an oos or fix it ticket. picking up loaded/sealed trailers or meeting a guy, what are we supposed to do? I run em if flashing . its on the company regardless. if enough get put out of service they can check inspection history, then address accordingly. this is asduming of course this is a driver bug and not a shop/company feature ....
on arrival I always notify dispatch of any issue so it wont get reloaded until fixed. -
