if it's a situation that he knows the tooth is coming out. then it really makes no difference who he sees. the tooth is coming out and anybody can do the job.
why deal with the pain.hal380 and Criminey Jade Thank this. -
You can have the infection drained by a dentist, but you will then need a root canal to save the tooth or extraction. Not all dentists conduct oral surgery, so many will treat the infection first. Either way, the infection must be dealt with ASAP.

Best to listen to TomOfTx.
Don't underestimate this form of medical condition.
In century's past this was one of the biggest killers.
It is only with modern medical treatment that this has changed.
Leave it to late and it can cause permanent damage or even death.
There is also almost zero chance of getting over it by riding it out.hal380 and Criminey Jade Thank this. -
I had one a few years ago and my dentist is an oral surgeon. He's the one that told me that he would extract unless the infection was killed first
hal380 and Criminey Jade Thank this. -
Gunner, true, a dentist would want the infection treated before doing an extraction. The seriousness of the infection depends on whether it is a periapical (tip of the tooth root) or periodontal (surface gums near tooth), and how long the infection has been present.
hal380 Thanks this. -
mine was near the gums. pissed me off he did a root canal. instead of just poking a hole like i always do when i get a ignorant zit.
he poked a hole the second time.hal380 Thanks this. -
I would tell the guy he can fly home or seek treatment.

If he is gonna " ride it out " go to pharmacy find orajel liquid or better yet a brand called red cross this is a brand of oral anti something or other , have him pour a few drops directly on the area let it soak as line as he can stand it then lay down with hurt side down on a pillow put a drip cloth under mouth lay still and allow himself to drool it away try not swallowing the liquid solution , I have had a few of these when in remote aces it will work do it every 2/4 hours it draws the infection away and the drooling relaxes the gum tissue to real ease the pressure inside the tooth canal , as I said the "Red cross brand" is best but orajel red liquid works as well just not as fast and usually takes more applications , this will work , usually I would drool and eventually fall asleep wake up with well a soaked rag/ wash cloth to well ect , it will work.
hal380 Thanks this. -
notsonewb, consider yourself lucky. Anesthetics do not eliminate infections, they just dull the pain. Since I do not know the driver in question here, I would not recommend anything short of treating the infection.
