BUT!!! That 8 day don't keep the logs in the truck is about as dumb as you can get!
Whats the big deal?
OK in the OP's post the BF actually put on a log he drove for 14 hours? Did he NOT pay attention to anything they taught him in that driving mill?? But driving for more than those 11 then he knew he messed up and besides was someone in the truck holding a gun to his head making him drive 14 hours? If not then well he's screwed!
OK Back to that 8 day statement.
If you have your logs properly done with no mistakes and even checked with a nice program like DDL or even your electronic logs whats the big deal?? WHY "mail them home?" They are legal with no mistakes then so what? Keep the whole year and let the DOT go looking as they wont! Not for an on scene accident! Only those doing an audit care about more than 8 days unless the guy is bored to tears and wants some company! I keep ALL of my logs in the book till day 8 of the next month then count the days out for the per diem claim, write that number on day one and on the envelope that ALL of my logs are in for tax time and do it again next month! I KNOW they are all good with NO mistakes and if a DOT says differently then I will see him in the courthouse and have him show the judge or arbitrator where he is wrong!
If driver is dumb enough to have a mistake on any day and keep it in the log book before the 8 days prior date then they really need to go back to logging class OR buy a laptop and a logging program as the fines now will cost for ONE mistake the complete cost of a fair to middling computer and the program! Not to mention a few other programs, games and heck even the dues for a porn site or two! LOL
If anyone is so paranoid that having 8 or more days of logs in the truck bothers you then really get out of trucking as you will stress out way to much with the other crapola we put up with on a daily basics!
Now what I think is funny as hello are those guys that think folding the pages in that pretty pattern will keep a DOT officer from unfolding them and looking at his past days can be a hoot especially when the officer goes past that 8th day and Mr Billy Big Rigger opens mouth and inserts foot with that "you can't go past day 8!"
I've heard the same reply several times standing in line! "AH, Driver, Where did you hear that? On the CB or at the truck stop?" Whats even better is the deer looking at headlight look the driver is standing there with!
But really, if your log is good which of course it is as you have the directions on how to fill them out on the log book, in the front of that Rand McNalley AND in the FNMCSA not to mention your laptop!
As to any "haven't you ever made a mistake on you logs?' question I know will hit me with, I'm going to be blunt.
Drivers Daily Log came out about in 2000 and was FREE!
Since I've been using it there has been only 1 mistake and that was after the 14/10 rule and that turned out to be a mistake with JJ Kellers new program the company was using not DDL! That was for 8 years that I never had a mistake on a log. Now before DDL and even using one I tried to write,, oh yeah, there were problems!
In today's technological wonders society there is NO reason a driver has a bad log! Period!
In fact name dropping Drivers Daily Log at a scale will save you a ton of time and aggravation!
Keep your logs together as they are worth a lot of deductions at the end of the year as long as you aren't getting bent with this per diem scam!

Heck, I kept my logbook all month long. Didn't drop off closed logbooks until I hit the house again. I know that legally (supposedly) DOT can back check all the log pages you keep on the truck whenever you get stopped, but my logs were always legal. Or at least always appeared legal, anyway. Why add additional stress to yourself.
As far as the u-turn bumpy, yeah...that might be an issue. Since none of us where there, it'll be hard to tell. But technically, since it was in a parking lot I wouldn't consider it a u-turn. Just a tighter than normal turn around. U-turns, in my opinion, happen out on the road. And yeah, I've done one or two. Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I wouldn't worry about him going to jail s long as there were no one injured he could be fined fo the violation or fired though

The DOT can not enforce any logbook activity beyond the 8 days because it's the only logs the driver is required to have on him during an inspection. I would not have even shown them a log that was that old. There's no legal requirement to.

I was in Law Enforcment 15 years, and now going to school to be a truck driver here in a couple weeks. I'll tell you I have done LOTS as a cop, and one was work accidents. Only Highway patrol, and only a few (DOT Certified) cops can enforce the DOT trucking laws. A cop can ask for your log book, but unless he is certified truck inspector, which MOST are not, he can't write a citation for it, and can't put you out of service. The only violation I see on the law enforcment side, Is maybe, illegal u-turn, and inattentive driving. IF there is a violation in the log book, there would be an additional citation (If he is certified). I couldn't imagine any jail time. Thats the Cop side of it, i'm not a trucker though.. Yet!!
