It makes no sense to have one of these rebuilt at a shop. By the time you factor in rebuild labor and R&R time, it easily becomes more expensive compared to swapping with a reman.
Air compressor problem.

The sputtering or popping reminds me of the safety discharge valve on the compressor when the valve goes bad or, is the frozen line causing the discharge valve to act up?

I have a couple more days of work before I can change dryer out but it has warmed up outside a bit.
But the other day when it happened...I took truck into my shop and drained wet tank and some water came out. Left it in the shop overnight and it hasn't done it since....so I'm thinking either the dryer or the dryer air line was froze up. -
If you change dryer just go ahead and change gov. 10-30 bucks. Good time to change pop off valves in head if its a bendix. All cheap stuff.

I changed the governor about a week ago. Pulled out of the shop today and hooked up trailer...but truck didn't want to build air. I increased idle up to 1000 rpm and it finally built to 125 and heard the dryer purge after about 20 mins
After that...it's been building air perfectly same as it usually does. -
Brake compressor keeps coming apart on the inside. This is the second one that has done this. Anybody have any idea what causes this.
