IS the fluttering noise from the air dryer normal when the air pressure calls for the compressor to kick in? It flutters for about 5-10 seconds then charges like normal with the cut off valve sounding normal too at 125LBS. Then when needing air again, it will flutter again.

    Thanks.

sounds like the spitter valve is getting weak or the cartrage might need changed.

Thanks. I was thinking the filter might need changing. Last time was last fall. I'll try that first.

An air dryer works off the air governor, when the governor allows air into the compressor the unloaders shift holding the intake valves open, cutting off air being compressed. The dryer discharge valve shifts with spring preasure and opens the port allowing the compressed air trapped in the cartridge to expel the oil and water from it. If you get flutter when the governor shifts to pumping, it is either #1, leakage in the compressor unloaders, remove the intake of the compressor with the engine stopped and the governor loaded, any air flow is an unloader problem, install an unloader kit. #2 the dryer, with engine stopped, and governor loaded, if you get leaking air from the unloader it needs a kit. #3 the governor is dry internally caused because a vent plug was not used and it fills with crud and it shifts slowly, replace the Governor. Just a thought!

never had an air governor do that to the air dryer but it is a cheap easy fix to replace one. i carry a airline nipple to bypass my air dryer when it acts up untill i can get the replacement parts to fix it. i also carry a spare govenor with me also. its better than paying labor on the road to get it changed.

"it is alot cheaper than road service or a wrecker."

hey now, I resemble a driver of one of those...

True we charge for our services, but we do have expenses also... Nothing is free anymore.
