Amazon fails to plan

Orlando lacks any good truck stops, period. Come to think of it, Florida doesn't have a lot of nice truck stops. Sure, you have the T/As in Baldwin, South Jacksonville, Marianna, and Vero Beach, as well as the Petro in Ocala, and of course, the several Flying J's in the state, but it's kind of slim choices.

 

Why's it Amazon's responsibility to provide parking? They're not a truckstop and have no obligation to provide anything.

 

Ahhh lack of parking explains the Amazon driving style of weaving around like a drunk and junk trucks that are the first in the ditch during a storm .
That explains things ! ...you people scare me !

 

Maybe you should pay a private business to provide parking for you. If you dont like it then dont haul their ####

 

In theory the local municipality would examine traffic impacts as part of the permitting process and the developer would have to do what they say regarding mitigating unacceptable traffic impacts. I was in Land Development consulting in Orlando metro for much of the last 20 years. It could take the form of impact fees, building parking, etc. When a high profile group like Amazon is talking about where to put something like that, and they are talking jobs it becomes really political. They can threaten to just put it somewhere else if the cost is too steep. The potential locations can then be pitted against one another to see who offers the best deal, etc.

For one so inclined the documents regarding the projected traffic impacts and any mitigation measures should be available to the public. Likely there were public meetings, etc in addition to multiple layers of review. The size of the impacts of an Amazon DC likely triggered what in Florida is called a DRI (Development of Regional Impact) that is a comprehensive review at the state level. So every body in Florida whose somebody had the opportunity to provide input had they seen fit to do so. If the situation is a total disaster, or code was totally sidestepped or politicians demanded everyone look the other way, that is likely all possible to discern by reviewin the public record.

 

I thought it was, Amazon plans to FAIL.

 

And it goes well beyond Amazon. Municipalities for as long as I can remember have refused to address the parking/traffic issue for fear of losing the tax dollars that result from the development of whse/light industrial sites. The company in question will simply go to the town 20 miles away that doesn't have any requirements. And every municipality loves the tax ratables from this type of business, very little in services required, no schools need to be built, very little in the way of police/fire services needed. They just bank(then spend) the tax dollars.
It is a pass the buck situation.
The trucking companies blame the Federal HOS regulations, say that the Feds should provide the parking (official ATA policy on the matter)
The shippers and receivers say it isn't my problem. They contracted for moving the stuff, not provide ancillary services.
The 3rd party parking providers(truck stops) are being overwhelmed, and are going out of business providing a value added service(parking) that is largely not being paid for.
Now you know why I am retired.

 

But if you go anywhere without a solid plan / place to park, that's your fault.
But, yeah, generally speaking, Amazon does indeed suck.

 

There is an easy fix.... Don't haul Amazon freight, it's dirt cheap anyway....
