Except it's part of your job to know what size of tractor and trailer you have.

So yes, The height of your fifth wheel is going to change between tractors. In that case, I would think that the measurement is there so that you know how much to add to the overall height.

I see what you guys are saying, but I still think that the measurement has a good reason to be there.

Right, given an air ride and correct tires that should be consistent.

But in my (limited) experience, the nose of a trailer usually sits higher than the tail. That means that the highest point on a trailer is not going to be a consistent height.

So it's one thing if a fleet keeps all of their 5th wheels at a very consistent height, but really, how often do you see that?

I would think the exact same about the nose of the trailer sitting higher than the rest of it.

To me a much more useful measurement would be the height of the inside of the box. Pretty easy to figure out tire size on your own.

I would think outside box measurement is more useful. That way if I know my 5th wheel height I can figure out overall height.

Inside box height helps the guys loading the box though.

Yeah, my fault. Used the wrong side of the box. It does make a difference though.

It's like asking which side of the chicken has the most feathers.

Yeah, I guess at the end of the day it may not matter, you can measure your height, pay attention to bridge heights, and hit a bridge that's six inches lower than it should be because they haven't changed the sign any of the past 4 times they've repaved the road beneath it.

Or it could be like...oh what was the bridge that got shutdown twice because they realized it was sinking?

Yeah... Overpass could be sinking too.

I know one thing's for sure...if we hit it, we'd probably still get a ticket.

I did 4 u turns today, a u turn is a great idea but not when your in fontana.

Anyone that says a u turn is never apropriot has drank the company kool-aid, anyone that gets hit doing one should get a new job.

I'll agree having that measurement there is a good idea. It just has to be "current" so to speak. Otherwise, it's pretty much pointless if it isn't right.

I would personally prefer to hook a tape on the top of the EMPTY trailer and stretch it down, since every truck is different.
