Wondering if any of you guys could let me know how the application process works with US Xpress. I put in my application and had it faxed in Monday this week. I have a bit over 3 weeks left till my CDL school is over, most recruiters say to apply 4 weeks early which I did. Anywho, applications in, next morning I get a phone call from a USX recruiter. Unfortunately, I didn't have my phone on me while out in the yard and missed the call (just got the voicemail). Called back, no answer from the recruiter at her direct line, calling a few times the last couple days. Finally got my back up recruiter, but she didn't really sound like she had looked through my application, but was ready to set an orientation date for me before I apologized and explained that I wasn't graduating for a few more weeks. I was told to call about a week before graduation to talk to someone again.

The reason I'm concerned, is that I was let go from my last job early 2012 and have been on unemployment since then. Doesn't look great... Asking the recruiter about that, she said as long as my last employer agrees with the reason I explained I was let go, it shouldn't be a problem. I'm worried about showing up to an orientation, then having someone look at my application closer and boot me out. I'm hoping that if I got a call back and the recruiter was willing to set me up for orientation (there weren't any other questions or discussions), I must have a green light in the system. If someone who understands their hiring process or has gone through it recently could give me some feedback or advice, that'd be a lot of relief. I want to start working ASAP, and I'm flat broke, so I can't really afford to get sent back from an orientation.

If anyone can give anything helpful here, I'd really appreciate it.

Legally, past employers aren't supposed to talk smack about you. Companies call past employers just to verify that you worked there.

Well, they can ask "would you hire so n so again?" But you're right, they can't talk smack.

USX calls these people to verify you worked there.

They will ask if that company would hire you ever again. They can't ask much more than that.

What state do you live in ?

I realized that as they were asking me, but I wasn't 100%. There always seems to be a loophole that screws me, lol. It was most likely a "bluff" to see what I'd say, but I just told them the truth, that if they were to ask my last employer why I was let go, they'd say the same thing I told them. No point in pissing them off and sounding defensive by saying "I know you can't ask that!", lol. I need all the help I can get in the hiring process with my sub par work history.

Again, I know that, but I figured as soon as they asked that it was a trick question. I'm pretty sure stating that they weren't allowed to do that wouldn't be as good as calmly saying they would back up my explanation for release, lol.

You are confused my friend. There are no federal laws that protect your employment information and or history IF YOU SIGN a release and if I am correct all companies require the signed release form releasing your former employer from liability if they tell you respective potential employer you were a piece of #### and never showed up on time. With that being said most companies will only give out your dates of employment and if your eligible for re- hire. Once you sign a release u have no privacy protection. I know, I have been there.
