My story is pretty long, but the short version:
I went to TDI in Oxford, Alabama to get my CDL. After a week, I didn't think trucking was for me because I honestly didn't think I was good at the driving portion. I found out AFTER I left that the instructors honestly thought I was a good driver. Obviously, you can't master double clutching in one week especially if you have never driven a manual ever.
The GI BIll will not let me go through the same program at the same school again. I just joined the Air Force Reserves for six years, but it isn't full time. My plan goes beyond trucking, but having a CDL at this point in my life seems to be my best option. I actually enjoyed driving a big truck. I just didn't think I was good at it. I was very safe but just need more experience.
I have my CDL Permit here until March. I'm not sure if the GI Bill will pay for the same type of training at another school either. Would it be worth it to possibly do a loan with one of the CDL schools and go to an over the road company?

You could always get a cdl. As a veteran myself, I highly recommend using your GI Bill to get your traditional degree. After that is completed if you still have the desire to get your cdl than do it.

How close are you to one of these towns?
Mobile
Evergreen
Leeds
Calera
Looks like your 44 miles from Leeds. How about the other ones?
I think if you're within 50 miles of either, you may qualify for cdl school through Evergreen Transport.
This company runs local and regional, so that might work for you being in the reserves.
Not sure if the company still has the program, but you can call and ask. They may still pay for cdl school in Evergreen and provide lodging.Last edited: Nov 24, 2018
