The big name companies that i know will run a MVR and Background check, when this thread came up, its shocks me that they will run a credit check too? It outright shocks me that any company, trucking or not, would run a credit check, all any driver is doing is driving an 18 wheeler from point A to point B with no money being transferred from the trucking outfit to the driver to the shipper/receiver.

Many employers run a credit check as a part of a standard background check. Not just in trucking, but in a whole lot of different jobs. Nothing shocking about it. In fact, it should be pretty obvious that they would rather not hire someone who has a history of having their paycheck garnished, as this is an unnecessary expense for the company.

That being said Grozen, I doubt that your credit history alone will keep you from a trucking job with MOST companies. And your age is certainly in your favor, as you are old enough to be mature, but still young enough to give years of service. (For companies who care about retaining their drivers. . .)

But I'm not sure that you don't have a good point about going through a company school. Not something I would normally advise, but perhaps with your credit history, it might be your best bet.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

Companies in all types of business have been doing this for at least 10 years and some as long as 20 years.

If I remember correctly insurance companies started using credit reports a little less than ten years ago. They have an agency that generates a score based on creditworthiness and insurance claims. It is like DAC or a credit bureau. Ask your agent.

Do I like it? Hell no. Does it make sense? Probably. No company wants to deal with garnishments. People with money problems often make bad decisions and often present more inherent risk.

What? Any company should be worried about if a "new hire" is a safety risk, little alone a financial risk. It boggles me that these companies have the balls to stick there nose where it don't belong. That is a bunch of BS if i ever heard of it.

To each his own on beliefs. I put myself on the other side of the desk before I pass judgement.

If I were the employer and you had my $80,000 worth of equipment and my customer's $100,000 worth of materials, I'd be interested in whether you were having financial difficulties.

IMHO, thirty years ago when people had values and principals this was not as important. Now that our modern society has such a sense of entitlement and lack of morals many are just one hard time away from helping themselves to whatever they want.

I don't like this but as a whole we have failed to teach values and principals to our offspring. Now we have to come in and try to regulate and use rules and laws to control the mess that has been made.
