I would bet the batteries. One of them is boiling itself. Not good to breath in and don't cause a spark next to it cause they can blow up. Replace all of them not just the bad one. Shut the truck off and take the battery cover off. One of them will sound like boiling water.

You only smell it through your a/c cause your sucking outside air I bet.

I used to buy deodorizer bombs, whatever Walmart or the parts store had in stock. And set them off right by the intake for recirculation. Seems like every time I swapped trucks the previous driver was a smoker. -
That is where you Mr, Darwin will help things along prying off covers that you don't need to be doing. -
