True, but 1/4'' is the general rule in a DOT inspection.

Steer axles with continuous strip linings can go down to 3/16".
So it is 1/4", (3/16" steer), or "worn to the wear indicator if the lining is so marked." The wear indicators are often more than 1/4", but the indicator is the limit.slowpoke89 Thanks this. -
1/4 equals 4 /16
minimum thickness for tires and brakes is 2/32 but tires have other various reasons they can also be put out of service -
i stand correctred., they post 3/16 which is slightly less the 1/4.
that's a LOT OF LIFE left to be throwing away. -
