Dont know if they where just joking but ive heard many times 50,000 miles and a deisel is just getting broke in.
-
My last overhaul used almost a gallon of oil in the first 3 to 5000 mile and quit and hasn't used but maybe 1`/2 to 3/4 gallon between changes, (10,000 miles) He just told me not to idle much and if i had to high idle.

Cat rings fully seat between 6 and 8K miles (AT) 190* +. Rotating assy is "seated" and full power by 80K. Starts to drop off at 450K, max aged power loss by 850K. Just standard rule of thumb. They're all different to an extent do to anything from idle, oil brand and maintenance to power, mods, and the driver's style...

I'll agree with that. The most important thing is to run the engine in under plenty of load. An unloaded engine will glaze up in no time when they're new.
When we finish a rebuild and the driver asks how to run the engine in we tell them to put two trailers behind it head for Perth (other side of the continent).dicky Thanks this. -
Rings are seated after a hard pull on a dyno if it was rebuilt correctly!
