The industry changed. Its bad for you because you had relationships and now newbies could get the same freight without all the work you put in. All that means is you need to change your business model for the current age. Business is all about adapting. Just because there are more and more changes happening recently doesn't change that

Fuel is simply too high to just deadhead home or anywhere for that matter.. And they know it.

That's the easy simpleton way. With a little homework you could make the same money, possibly more, with longer deadhead to better paying freight. Posted it dozens of times til blue in the face. Cheap and close by is always last resort. You wear out your equipment hauling freight 400 miles for below cost when maybe deadhead 250 to haul another 150 loaded miles for the same money which is better? The time involved being the same more deadhead and better paying freight is always better. But not too many people think what's possible beyond 50 or 100 miles of where they emptied out. It's crazy to take that cheap close stuff and not try something a little different.

The easy way to do it is Don't Get Your Backhaul Ahead of Your Front Haul! The confusion starts when you think that full rate is less than you could haul the load for and deadhead back.

Someone will haul it, the shipper, broker, or maybe the receiver or who ever is paying the bill, will call up one of those company TMC, J.B Hunt, or any of those $0.33-$0.44 cents per mile companies and send over a driver that will do whatever the dispatcher tells them to do at the office. Its not all the time that O/O are hauling it cheap, its the large company drivers that can haul it cheap and send in an army of trucks to cut O/O out the picture.

Being professional is the key, Im a shipper and YES I want to pay the cheapest rate. Ive had truckers call me back yelling at me for 100 bucks calling me cheap. If they would have just said "I cant do it for that can you add 100 for the lot lizard" some guy actually said that and I paid it lol. An if I see that guy in my area he is the first call I make AND IM STILL GONNA ASK FOR THE CHEAP RATE! I have called guys back and paid more then I normally would have because the way they handled themselves on the phone, thats someone I can work with. Get your phone skills down dont be rude and dont take thing personal "ITS ONLY BUSINESS"....

I was in Tulsa on a Thurs morn. I was looking to head home and there was a load right around the corner from where I was at - about 15,000 lbs and the rate was about $700.00. The customer really needed the load moved and I wanted to go home. I asked for more money and the broker said no because its a backhaul, he knew I was based out of HOU and load would take me home.
. Well I waited for about 1 hour and another load popped up loading about 65 miles from where I was but was 25,000 and was paying $1200 going to Tyler Tx .
Original broker called me back when I was picking up load going to Tyler but I was already booked:yes2557:
I could unload Fri am in Tyler and deadhead home to Houston or try to find a quick money load to get me home.

Would you have picked up the one right in your backyard or deadheaded 65 miles.?
