Location- Buffao NY
Hey everybody. I got my class A but have
automatic restrictions(need more time on double clutching to pass the road test). I found work for a company that has both class a and b vehicles. The B vehicles are mostly automatic and they will allow me to drive them so I got lucky with finding work with the auto restrictions for a local position. Their class A are mostly manual and they said I’d need my restriction off to drive those for a little better pay.
Can someone explain about how to get my restriction off? What I understand but unsure if it’s accurate is
1. Get my cdl permit again
2. Learn to drive manual(It’s really just double clutching messing me up)
3.rent a manual vehicle and drive to the testing area with an already licensed driver
4. Take only the road test and pass
So am am I allowed to take it in a class B manual truck and get the restrictions off my class A? Or does it need to be a class A with a trailer? To get a new permit does it need to be class A if I’m trying to get it off my class a cdl? If I take it in a class B does the permit need to be class B?
thanks again in advance

You need to take the road test with a full Class A vehicle (tractor and trailer) with a manual. Your first stop will be to a NY state license bureau (NOT a county license agency...), and explain what you are doing; removing a restriction to a pre-existing CDL-A. Things may have changed since I last went there, so I'm not going to speculate. Still, I believe that you are removing a restriction, not gaining an endorsement.
Once you get the permit (if needed), you can practice on a CDL-A vehicle only when you have a driver that does not have the automatic transmission restriction sitting in the vehicle with you. This driver also needs to be with the rig when you show up for the test.
Your company may be willing for you to team with an unrestricted driver for a week or so before the test. Otherwise, you may need to take a refresher course at your own expense at a recognized trucking school...Last edited: Apr 6, 2024
tscottme and BuffTruckalo Thank this. -
Here it needs to be a Class A manual to test in. Trailer is required. Permit is not required as you already have your Class A license.

Alright thanks. I read somewhere that you could take it in either a class A or class B. Maybe it wasn’t accurate or different state requirements
Thanks again -
