I am looking to buy a used truck and reactivate my authority. I am looking at 2 different Kenworth w900’s. The first is a 1997 with a Detroit 12.7 and the second is a 2013 with a Cummins ISX15. The 2013 will probably need an apu which it doesn’t currently have. Outside of chassis and drivetrain repair or maintenance which engine would you choose? This truck will be used for regional flatbed work. Thanks in advance

    austinmike Thanks this.

I’m sure both trucks are going to need absolutely everything but Atleast the 97 has no emissions and no elog, even if it has a Detroit In it

The S60 was a really good engine but you can’t take that California. Not sure if you can even hook ELD to it. Running your own truck might be difficult if broker or anyone requires ELD.

13 ISX you should check to make sure it did not have that bad ceramic fuel pump some years ago ISX had. The ceramic fuel pump would explode and take out the most of the engine or fuel system. They had upgraded them before they went bad. I remember couple years ISx have trouble with oil flow to top of engine and the cams were going bad for no reason they said at the time. Seems like people said years later the soot was clogging the oil passages to top of engine or something like that. Cummins never admitted to anything wrong with those engines. I don’t remember exact years you might doubt check

Unless the '97 has been meticulously maintained odds are it's a worn out piece of junk that'll nickle and dime you.

The Series 60 is arguably one of the best electronic engines produced. The ISX not so much.

So the 97 has both differentials and transmission rebuilt but the interior and probably other things need work. The 13 is a very clean truck cosmetically but like several of you have stated I’m not really a fan of the ISX15. The 97 is $25k and the 13 is $55k just to add more context.

You can buy 400k mile T680's and Cascadias cheaper

Your statement is true. If I were going to really drive this truck full time for several years I would get a Cascadia. My plan is not to drive this truck full time for years. I would be driving it full time for a year or two if that and then transition to leasing on other drivers and renting trailers which is why I’m not necessarily focused on a newer fuel efficient truck.

The ‘13 is way too much money. There are 2020 trucks sitting around, for that.

The mileage on a ‘20 means it’s going to need all the regular stuff an emission truck needs, which is why fleets flip them at ~500K miles. But, at least it’ll fuel mileage decently.

Long FLD and cke Thank this.
