I’m a diesel mech in the Marine Corps and recently troubleshot and fixed a c12 with a no start condition. Truck was running fine the day prior and suddenly would not start. Engine would crank fine, good fuel pressure, all the injectors tested out fine, no engine codes, and the ECM was reading fine and no errors whatsoever in CAT ET. After about 2 days of trying everything I swapped an ecm from another c12 and bam the thing fired right up? The wiring to the ecm on prior to swapping was fine and tight and all the pins looked good, so in all I ordered a new ECM and since the old one was readible in CAT ET I backed up the injector trim files and flashed them to the new ECM as well as some other basic parameters and after that and a few tie rod ends the truck was good to go. My only question is what the heck was wrong with the original ECM and why didn’t CAT ET pick up anything or even detect the ECM to begin with.

I don't know that much about ECMs but wanted to thank you for your service.

No you are right about that but in the end will throw code 55 which is basically the death code. Check engine light will keep flashing the code. That’s what mine did a year ago on my c12. The code means something about all sensors near to be recalibrated.
I’m wondering if there was anything wrong with this guys ecm in the first place. Maybe it was just a connection issue. It fired up with different ecm just becuase he unplugged the old computer and plugged in a different one. I wonder what would have happened if he just unplugged the old one and plugged it back in

Flash code 55 is no codes, not very deadly.

Sorry wrong code. If your interested in sensor calibration code that I meant to use I can look it up for you when I get home later. I’ll have to look in my cat manual. Yeah 55 is no codes and obviously won’t be flashing. Thanks for the correction old buddy

With any CAT suspect ECM crank no start or communication issue my first step is to install an OEM bypass harness to the ECM and connect right to the batteries to bypass. If you order a new ECM connector from CAT or your OEM
you can build one yourself on the cheap or save an old harness to build one too. If it fires or you can talk to it then you know for certain you have a OEM power or ground supply/ datalink issue. From there start loading powers and grounds with a headlight or the like and shake down your wiring. If still no go, then new ECM time.

More often than not most failed Yellow ECM's ussually wont communicate but not always. Sometimes it can be intermittent, too. If you do get hooked up on one that's stubborn always save your ECM replacement file and Copy configuration immediately cuz there has been times where you only get one shot and it can be gone forever. The failed internal battery is common. I'm pretty sure the injector drivers are prone to failure internal to the ECM as well. Then other times there is just nothing at all and your forced to start from scratch, pin time, trim codes, parameters, ...........

It was code 42. Had to look at my bill from cat. What had happened was I disconnected batteries and reinstalled new batteries on my truck and was told that internal battery was failed on ecm. So once I hooked up new batteries to truck the ecm basically failed

    spsauerland Thanks this.
