53' stepdeck?? Is it a spread? If so where is front axle--may have been trying to hit ya 4 bridge and cited wrong--have couple friends still run out there(reefer) they went 2 54' w/14' spread--seemed to do the trick

We are out there every week, 9 trucks total, we are right at 74' long, never an issue on Interstate hwy's, have been popped off route though.
Are you SURE you have a KP to rear axle CENTER, (not center of rear axle group) of 40' or less with tandems, 38' or less with single axle. -
Yeah, interstate is legal, SR (state routes) they can pop you. US 101 near Golden Gate bridge happens all the time.

In CA, the 65' length law for a tractor & semi-trailer is always in effect unless all of the following are met:
1) On a STAA approved route (or immediately off an STAA approved route for local delivery/service)
2) For trailers exceeding 48' but less than 53' -- the kingpin to center of rear axle must be 40' or less
3) Must be a truckload, either picking up or delivering in its entirety at a single stop (rarely enforced)
Since your driver got popped at the Shasta/Dunsmuir scales on I-5, I'd bet dollars to donuts your truck exceeded 40' KCRA so it was, in fact, over length since it did not qualify for the staa exemption. -
Can you post a link to support #3? If such a rule actually exists, then a huge, HUGE, number of trucks are in violation every day. I have a hard time believing CA would pass up such an easy and lucrative source of revenue.

I was mistaken on #3 -- that rule has nothing to do with STAA trucks. You cannot pickup and deliver the same load within the state of California without a CA-number. You can make multiple pickups as long as everything is destined for out of state. Or you can make multiple deliveries so long as it all originated out of state.

If your stepdeck is 53' with a fixed spread it is not legal above the grapevine in CA. You have to be able to slide the rear axle forward to use it there. I have one registered in CA not legal above grapevine, that's how I Know.

Oh snap. My former employer would be in violation of that rule. We did a few instate pickups and drops and we didn't have a C A number.

I was once dispatched from Vegas to a pickup in Calexico. I ran US95 to Blythe then caught 78 down to 111. On the road atlas all but a short stretch of 78 between Blythe and Ripley is a highlighted STAA route. I ran it anyway and all over saw was a sign that said that combinations over 65' were not "recommended" due to some sharp curves which honestly weren't that bad. I am over 65' so I guess I was playing with fire. Didnt get stopped but honestly how can you have that setup and not expect trucks to use that highway without any other way to link the highlighted 78 with I10.
